Smithboro High School “Eagles”

SMITHBORO MAIN STREET LATE 1800s / EARLY 1900s
The History of Smithboro High School

Smithboro (population 200) is located in southeastern Illinois in the east-central portion of Bond County.  The town is situated about 3 miles east of Greenville and 35 miles northeast of East St. Louis.  U.S. Route 40 travels directly through Smithboro.  Illinois Route 140 passes by the northside of town while Interstate Highway 70 passes about a mile south of town.  The Burlington Northern and Conrail railroad lines intersect in Smithboro.

A brief history of Smithboro was located at the Wikipedia address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithboro,_Illinois .  According to Wikipedia, Smithboro was originally established as Henderson Station.  The name was changed to Smithboro and named after the town’s postmaster, Henry Smith. The town was officially incorporated in 1889. The spelling of the name of the town was changed from Smithborough to its current name in 1893.

Some excellent information and memories of the history of Smithsboro and its former school system are offered to us by former student Marvin Roach:

“In the late 1800’s Smithboro was the location of a productive coal mine and nearly was named the county seat of Bond County. After the mine closed the town lost a lot of their population. I remember as a child in the 1950’s Smithboro having a population of around 250 people with a post office, two grocery stores, an appliance store, a barber shop, a restaurant, a garage, a service station, and the school. It was also the location of a state highway department garage and the C B&Q railroad had a crew and a building that housed equipment for section repairs.  At that time Route 40 was a major highway through this part of Illinois and ran through Smithboro. After interstate 70 opened in 1967 some of these businesses closed. All that remains of these is the post office. The population is now at 200 and the only business left is a package liquor store with gas pumps.  Smithboro, like so many other towns has suffered from the greater mobility that people have today.”

Regarding the former school system…”The building that housed the high school was torn down in the late 1990’s. It was a two story brick building with four rooms upstairs and two elementary grades in each room and a full basement downstairs. I have been told that the classrooms for the high school were located there. I remember there being blackboards on the walls in the basement. There was no gymnasium. When I played basketball in the 8th grade we practiced outside and played our home games at the old Mulberry Grove school gym. Grades 1 through 8 attended Smithboro school until the 1958-1959 school year. Two more classrooms and a gym were added at that time and grades 1 through 6 had a room for each grade. Grades 7 and 8 were sent to Mulberry Grove Junior High. Smithboro school was closed in the middle 1970’s with all students going to the Mulberry Grove schools.

The two rooms and the gym are all that remain of the school and today house the Smithboro volunteer fire department.”

We know that the town once supported a high school, a two-year high school.  Our guess is that the high school courses were offered beginning in the early 1900s.  It was likely in the late 1940s Smithboro High School closed. We know that the students of Smithboro today attend classes in nearby Mulberry Grove.

Memories

From Marvin Roach:

“I attended Smithboro grade school from 1950 to 1958 and the high school was closed sometime before that. It was a 2 year high school. The team name was Eagles and the school colors were green and white. I remember there were two trophys for basketball that were still there from the high school. I’m sure they had a baseball team but am not positive. Hope this helps. It was very interesting to find your site. I played basketball and baseball at Mulberry Grove high and many of the schools we played have since closed and are on your list.”

The History of Skokie – Niles East High School

Skokie (population 63,348) is located in northern Cook County in northeastern Illinois.  It is considered a near-north suburb of Chicago. Illinois Route 50 and U.S. Route 41 intersect with Illinois Route 58 in town. Interstate Highway 94 runs along the western edge of Skokie.

The town was established in 1888 and originally named Niles Centre. In 1910, the town name was changed to Niles Center. Folks in the area got this confused with a town nearby called Niles. It was decided in 1940 to change the name again to the current name of Skokie. The population in Skokie boomed between the years of 1920 and 1960. The population of Skokie progressed as follows: 1900-529 residents, 1920-763 residents, 1940-7,172 residents, 1960-59,364 residents.

With the growth of the city also came the growth of the school system. The school system was established soon after the town became incorporated. It was not until 1938 however that Niles High School, the forerunner for Niles East High School, was formed. Niles High School was the only school in town until Skokie’s and the other northern suburban towns amazing growth spurt allowed for the formation of two new high schools in the area, Niles West and Niles North. The three schools flourished for the next two decades until declining enrollment forced the closure of one. Being the oldest facility, it was Niles East that was closed in 1980. All students were then split between Niles North and Niles West High Schools.

Only a portion of the Niles East High School building still stands. A large portion of the building was demolished and new construction was put in place by its current owner and user, Oakton Community College.

Larry Perlman, who attended Niles East from 1977-80, provides the following tidbit of information regarding the Niles East HS building:

“The movies “Risky Business” and “16 Candles” were both partially filmed at Niles East.”

Niles East High School Quick Facts

Year opened:              1938

Year closed:               1980

School nickname:        the “Trojans”

School colors:             Blue & Gold

School Fight Song:

Nilehi, Nilehi

Go out and win this game,

We’ll help you to try,

The Trojans were a mighty race,

They fought with lots of vim

Let’s keep our fighting spirit and we’ll win!

Let’s go now

Gold and Blue

We’re true to you

We’ll stand behind you always to a man.

Let’s keep our colors flying high

Our motto is to do or die

Let’s win this game Nilehi!

Let’s Go Nilehi!

Let’s GoTrojans!

Fight Hard Nilehi!

VICTORY IS OURS!!

From Joel Goldman (Class of 1965):

In addition to the fight song, you may be interested to know that Niles (I don’t know if this predates the creation of East or not) has an Alma Mater. Here are the lyrics:

GOLD AND BLUE

Gold and Blue we sing to you
To you we bring our hearts so true

When we go off to College, we will think of you old school
Where we gained lots of knowledge and learned the golden rule

Though years may come and years may go
Deep in our hearts we’ll always know

That there’s only one real high school
And so we sing anew
We love you Gold and Blue

The only word that may have been altered from time to time

is in the phrase “real high school” in the last stanza. I

have also heard it as “true high school.”

The Niles East High School Trojans excelled in MANY different sports and events in state-wide competition.  The IHSA web site (www.ihsa.org) lists a Niles East HS success in nearly every sport and event in which records are kept.  The Trojans competed in the Suburban League Conference with New Trier, Evanston, Oak Park, Proviso, Highland Park, Morton, and Waukegan.

Though no team State Championships were won, the Trojans did have several top ten finishes.  There were several individual state champions in various events.  The school was known as Skokie Niles High School until the early 1960s when the name was changed to Niles East. The extensive history of the Niles East High School Trojans is listed below.

BOYS BASEBALL

The Trojan baseball teams had three trips to the state baseball tournament.  Twice the Trojans finished in the Sweet 16, once in the Elite 8.  The 1957-58 team nearly took it all, losing the State Championship game in 8 innings to Maine Township High School of Des Plaines.  The great accomplishments and game scores of the 1958 team are listed below.

1975-76           District Champions / State Qualifier

BOYS FOOTBALL

There is no mention of the Niles or Niles East High School football Trojans on the IHSA web site. The 1958 squad was said to have been a good one, defeating their arch-rivals Evanston during the course of the season.  The squad of 1978 finished at 4 wins and 5 losses, good enough for 3RD Place in the conference standings.  If you have any further information on the Niles HS or Niles East HS boys football teams please forward it to us so we can share it with others.

BOYS GOLF

The Niles East HS boys golf team had one individual place 2nd in the State meet competition.  On a team level the Trojans also brought home a District Title.

BOYS FENCING

The statement at the beginning of the sports section on this page regarding niles East never having won a state title in any sport is not entirely true.  Scott Blanke (Class of 1971) tells us of one state championship that the Niles East boys fencing program earned in 1971:

“Someone stated that Niles East had no state champions as a team.  I am proud to state that I was part of the 1970 state champion fencing team.  My team-mates placed 1st, 3rd, 4rd, 10th, 13th and 16th out of 66 fencing boys.  My team placed first and I still own the white letter sweater that a state champion was allowed to wear.”

Phenominal accomplishment by the Niles East fencing team of 1971!!

**Steve Alleman (Class of 1966) tells us the following as well:

“I attended Niles East from 1962-1966 and was on the Gymnastics Team (1965, Trampoline 4th place). I remember that a boy named Harvey Harris was a State Champion in fencing, and might have been for 2 years, 65 and 66.”

THEATRE

The Illinois Theatre Festival is the largest, non-competetive high school theatre festival in the world. It was organized in 1976 by teachers from the Chicago suburbs with East’s very own Jerry Proffit leading the efforts. This festival is still going strong as they perform at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) and Illinois State University every other January. Niles East participated in this festival from 1976 to 1980.

Distinguished Alumni

Martin Chalfie – NEHS Class of 1966 – Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry awarded in 2008 “for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP.”

(Information provided by Steve Alleman.)

H. Robert Horvitz – NEHS Class of 1964 – He received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology for his research on the nematodeworm – Caenorhabditis elegans.

(Information provided by Steve Alleman.)

Alan Sutton – Chicago Tribune high school sports writer from 1976 to 2008. Sports editor of the Nilehilite during his high school years. Official Tribune biography: “Before joining the Chicago Tribune in 1976, he worked for (in order) the Rochester (N.Y.) Times-Union, Boston Globe, St. Petersburg Times, Daily Herald and Miami Herald. In St. Petersburg, he wrote about high school sports and covered games involving future NBA stars Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins (Orlando Evans) and Otis Birdsong (Winter Haven). He’s been on the girls high school basketball beat at the Tribune since 1996 and has seen between 900 and 1,000 games. Alan has been a voter in the Associated Press’ Class AA state poll and also has been on the panel of voters for the Gatorade Athlete of the Year. He is also responsible for compiling the Ms. Basketball ballot.”

**From Capi Pike (Class of 1957):

“Did you know that Dorothy Collins, one of my classmates and 1957 graduate had her own column in the Chgo Trib for quite a few years. Another of our classmates, Chuck Slack, who I also went to Lincolnwood Grammar School with, was a feature cartoonist for the Trib for many years. Yet another, Bruce Robbins, a very accomplished pianist, was a lounge musician in the Chicago area for years and years.”

**Dave Kaplan

Famous Chicago radio and television sports talk show host Dave Kaplan is a graduate of Niles East High School.

MEMORIES

From former teacher Ellen Peirce (1974-1980):

“I taught at Niles East High School from 1974 to 1980, and those of us who were part of the faculty always missed this school!”

The History of Simpson High School

Simpson (population 54) is located in the far southern portion of Illinois in the east-central portion of Johnson County.  The main road leading to and from Simpson is Illinois Route 147.  Simpson is located on Route 147 about seven miles east of Interstate Highway 24.  A town of note near Simpson might be Carbondale, about 30 miles to the northwest (as the crow flies, of course).  Cedar Creek flows through Simpson as well.

Simpson was established in 1888 along the St. Louis, Alton, & Terre Haute Railroad line. It is named after J.M. Simpson who donated the farm land on which the town was begun.

Simpson likely began school operations for its children shortly after its beginning. , Highschool courses were likely begun in the late 1800s or early 1899s. We know that by 1920 Simpson had a 3-year high school. It is quite possible that it was the middle 1940s, when the state-wide consolidation effort took place, that the high school in Simpson was deactivated.  We do know that at some point the kids of Simpson began attending high school with their neighbors seven miles to the southwest, Vienna.

The history and fate of Simpson High School are in need of research.  Very little is available on the internet.  We are hopeful that a local resident or history buff can help us with the details.

ATHLETICSIt is a fact that Simpson High School competed in the sport of boys basketball.  It is quite possible that track and baseball were offered as well.  We know of the school’s participation in basketball because of its mention on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org). As you can see in the “Quick Facts” area, we are in need of a lot of information on the school’s athletic, as well as overall, history.BOYS BASKETBALL

The boys basketball team at Simpson High School had three seasons in which they were the “king” of the small schools in their area.  District Championship trophies were won in 1929, 1931, and 1940.  Unfortunately team records and coaches names are not available.

Jim Jones provided us with this tidbit of information regarding the Simpson High School boys of 1930-31, who set a record that will never be broken:

“I have this great piece of information for you concerning Simpson High School, taken from page 39 (the 1931 tournament) of _100 Years of Madness: The Illinois High School Association Boys’ Basketball Tournament (an excellent book if you don’t know about it – I got a copy from the IHSA store):

“Johnston City rallied past Benton in the sectional semifinals at Carbondale and then beat Simpson in overtime in the finals.  With an enrollment of just 25 students, Simpson was the smallest school EVER to make the final 16 of the state tournament.

Truly incredible to think that Simpson almost made the “Elite Eight” with just 25 kids!  Johnston City would finish 4th that year.”

The History of Sigel St. Michael High School

Sigel (population 386) is located in lower eastern Illinois in the southeast corner of Shelby County.  U.S. Route 45 is the main roadway to and from Sigel while Interstate Highway 57 runs just to the east of town.  The Illinois Central Railroad also runs through Sigel.  Sigel is situated about 5 miles northeast of Effingham.

According to the web address of http://www.edenmartin.com/counties/bigsprng.htm#B , Sigel was first platted in 1863 along the Illinois Central Railroad.  The town was called Hooker until its name was changed in 1871.  Several small businesses soon sprung up including two hotels and two churches.

Sigel High School was in operation from 1930-54 under the auspices of St. Michael Catholic Parish. …

St. Michael’s Parish began in 1866 and opened its own parochial elementary school in 1877. The Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, whose Motherhouse is in Joliet, Illinois (hence, commonly identified as the “Joliet Franciscan Sisters”), assumed the responsibility for staffing St. Michael School upon its opening in 1877. In 1928 plans began for a new combination school/convent building which opened in 1930.

When the new structure was ready, it featured four classrooms. Since only three classrooms were needed for the eight grades of the elementary school, Father George E. Faller, the Pastor, and Sister M. Michelina, the Principal, decided to start a high school in the fourth classroom. Thus, St. Michael School in Sigel became a Catholic grade and high school program. The high school had a three-year curriculum and was officially known as the Sigel High School.

Classes began at the Sigel High School on September 5, 1930, with 11 students (5 boys and six girls) taught by Sister M. Humiliana, Teacher and Principal (until 1943). In 1931 enrollment rose to 27 students and Sister M. Aurea joined the faculty. The following year a third year was added and Sister M. Nothburga joined the other two Sisters. In 1933, Mr. Kenneth Baker joined the faculty (he would remain until 1952) while Sister Nothburga was assigned elsewhere. After that point, for the duration of the school’s existence, the faculty would consist of two Joliet Franciscan Sisters, one of whom would serve as Principal, and one lay teacher. The first graduating class was 1933. Enrollment typically hovered at about thirty students until it declined significantly in the school’s final years.

During the 1934-35 academic year, Sister Aurea was assigned elsewhere and was replaced by Sister M. Borromeo (who would become Mother Borromeo, the Mother General of the whole Joliet Franciscan Order, in 1956). Sister Humiliana continued as Principal and Mr. Baker remained on the faculty. This arrangement lasted throughout the 1935-36 academic year.

In the fall of 1936, Sister M. Bonaventure arrived to replace Sister Borromeo, who had been assigned to Mansfield, Ohio. From 1936 until spring 1943, the faculty remained the same: Sister M. Humiliana, Principal; joined by faculty members Sister M. Bonaventure and Mr. Kenneth Baker. Enrollment reached its all-time high of 35 in 1937.

In 1943, after thirteen years of service, founding Principal Sister Humiliana was replaced as Principal by Sister M. SolanaMr. Baker and Sister Bonaventure remained on the faculty under Sister Solana for two years.

In 1945, Sister Bonaventure became the Principal, and from then until spring of 1949, Sister Bonaventure headed a stable faculty of Mr. Baker and Sister M. Siena. In 1949, Sister Siena departed and was replaced in her classroom by a native of Sigel who had already been serving on the St. Michael Grade School faculty for several years: Sister M. Evangela (Stella) Hanfland.

Three years later, in the fall of 1952, significant changes occurred when school opened in the fall and Principal Sister Bonaventure was replaced by Sister Evangela (who would remain as the school‘s Principal until its closure in 1954), and veteran faculty member Mr. Kenneth Baker was replaced by Mr. Walter Scott (who would also remain until the 1954 closure). For 1952-53, Sister M. Protase was the third faculty member and in 1953-54, that position was occupied by Sister M. Felicitas.

In 1949, the school transitioned from a three-year program to a two-year program and thereafter was called The Sigel Junior High School. Enrollment trends became worrying. An enrollment of 28 students in 1945-46 became 23 students by 1946-47, and by the fall of 1949, enrollment was at 14. Numbers fluctuated thereafter, never exceeding the twenties and in the final year of the school, 1953-54, enrollment stood at 18.

The Sigel Junior High School closed its doors when the spring semester ended in 1954, ending a twenty-four year tradition.

St. Michael Grade School, which extends to Grade 8, continues to flourish under a faculty composed entirely of lay teachers. The Joliet Franciscan Sisters, who also operated the public elementary schools for decades at Lillyville and Green Creek, have left an enduring footprint on Effingham County and the surrounding area, but no longer staff schools corporately.

Much of the information contained in this article is drawn from the book, Sigel, IL: 1863-1988, 125 Years (no author). In particular, readers may find it interesting that complete enrollment lists for all twenty-four years of the Sigel High School’s existence can be found on pages 85-97.

The History of Sidney High School

Sidney (population 1,062) is located in east-central Illinois in the southeastern portion of Champaign County.  The town is about 10 miles southeast of Champaign/Urbana.  Railroads were what originally made this town prosper as the Missourri Pacific runs to the east of town and the Norfolk & Western runs directly through the heart of town.  The main roadways leading to and from Sidney are County Highway 12 and County Road 1000.  The Salt Fork Creek flows through the northwest side of Sidney.

According to “Place Names of Illinois” by Edward Calloway, Sidney was originally settled in 1837. It was named “Sydney” after one of the founders’ daughters. When the name was submitted to the state of Illinois a clerk changed the spelling to “Sidney” which it remains today.

The history of Sidney and its school system is in need of research.  According to the web address provided to us by Chris Christenson, http://www.prairienet.org/~ndalrym/schoolold.html , Sidney school was built in 1895 and housed grades 1 – 11.  Students who wished to attend a fourth year of high school in those early days had to do so at another location.

We are not certain if Sidney High School ever added a fourth year of curriculum.  Sidney High School served the community nicely for several decades.  At some point, we believe it to be the late 1940s, the folks of Sidney agreed to join several other Champaign County towns and became part of the Unity School District.

The high school for the new district was located in nearby Tolono.  The original Sidney High School building served as a grade school for many years for the Unity School District. Chris Christensen tells us that the Sidney school building was demolished in the late 1990s. At one time the building was possibly considered one of the oldest school buildings still in use for its original purpose in Illinois.

The History of Sidell Jamaica High School

Sidell (population 626) is located in lower-eastern Illinois in the southwestern portion of Vermilion County. Danville is located about 15 miles to the northeast of Sidell.  Sidell sites quietly on the intersection of the county roads of E 300 North and N 600 East.  The Missourri Pacific Railroad cuts directly through the middle of Sidell.  A branch of the Little Vermilion River flows by the western edge of town while the Archie Creek flows to the south of town. Sidell is named after John Sidell, an Illinois state representative who owned the property the town was platted on. (Place Names of Illinois / Edward Callary).

Fairmount (population 640) is located in eastern Illinois in southwest Vermillion County.  This places Fairmount about 15 miles southwest of Danville on County Roads N 600 East and Homer – Catlin Road.  The Norfolk & Western Railroad travels through the center of town and was instrumental in its early growth and establishment.  The Jordan Creek flows east of town.  Fairmount was first settled in 1850 along the Great Northern Railroad. The first name chosen for the village was “Salina.” The town name was changed to Fairmount in 1857, likely after a town of a similar name in the eastern United States (Place Names of Illinois / Edward Callary).

Indianola (population 207) is located in far eastern in Illinois in south-central Vermillion County.  There are no major roadways leading to or from Indianloa.  County Roads E 350 North Road and E 450 North Road border the north and south ends of town and N 1250 East Road runs into the north side of town. The Missouri Pacific Railroad runs through town as does the Swank Creek. Indianola was established in 1882. It was first named Chillicothe and then Dallas. The name Indianola was eventually given to the town as a version of Indiana by the town’s post master, a Mr. Culbertson. (Place Names of Illinois / Edward Callary).

All three of these towns supported their own school systems, which included a high school for each, through the early 1950s. In 1955 the schools officially consolidated to create the Jamaica School District, which included Jamaica High School. A wonderful history of the Jamaica School District is found in the version of a newspaper exposition completed by the Sidell Reporter. The article (actually series of articles) states the following, in summary:

The Illinois State Legislature created an average daily attendance rule for school districts in 1952. This put pressure on small school districts to consolidate. For the 1952-53 school year Sidell High School had an enrollment of 52 students, with 41 being in the freshmen and sophomore grades. Indianola was a smaller high school than Sidell, with Fairmount High School of similar size as that of Sidell.

In May of 1952 consolidation talks between the three schools began. The proposal was to create a consolidated high school district which would not only be more stable but offer greater opportunities for the students. Though for the 1952-53 school year the combined enrollment of the three high schools would be 162 it was projected, based on grade school class enrollments, that the combined high school enrollment would top 200 students within a few years.

in 1952 this decision did not require a vote of the public. The three school boards along with the County Board of School Trustees could approve consolidation or  majority of voters in the three districts could agree to petition the County School Board for approval to consolidate. Enough voters signed petitions in each of the three school districts to proceed with the consolidation request. The breakdown of voters wishing to pursue the consolidation in each of the districts was as follows with 51% needed to continue:

Fairmount – 385 voters or 65%

Indianola – 274 voters or 70%

Sidell – 408 voters or 64%

The new district was approved in January of 1953. The district would be given the number 237. A new school board was elected in March of 1953. William J. Goreham was hired as the superintendent. Mr. Goreham had been the principal of Sidell High School for the previous 26 years. The school board and superintendent were officially in charge of the newly formed district effective July 1, 1953.

A new building needed to be constructed to house the large influx of students. All three high schools, Fairmount, Sidell, and Indianola were to continue functioning separately until the new building was finished. Each would also continue to support their own athletic programs. The site for the new building was to be a centrally located area between Fairmount and Sidell near the very small hamlet of Jamaica.

Construction on the new building began in March of 1954 with the building to be ready for use at the beginning of the 1955-56 school year. Entries to name the new high school came in many forms. “FairInDale”, “Piankeshaw”, “Kickapoo”, “Midland”, and “Prarieland” were among the more popular options. The school board finally settled on “Jamaica Consolidated High School.”

The three former high school buildings in each town were sold to the grade school districts in each town for the sum of $25. The last graduating classes for the Sidell, Fairmount, and Indianola high school seniors were held in May of 1955. An open house for the public to view the new high school building was held in August of 1955. The first day of school for Jamaica Consolidated High School District 237 was held on September 6, 1955. The first graduation ceremonies at the new school would take place on May 31, 1956 with 43 students receiving their diplomas.

The Jamaica High School District provided nearly six decades of quality education and high standards of athletic and other extra-curricular activities. In 1995, however, the decision was made to co-op all athletics with Jamaica High School’s neighbor, Catlin High School. The two high schools would operate separately academically however all sports would now be shared under the name of the “Salt Fork “Storm”.”

Financial concerns and dwindling enrollment began taking its toll on the Jamaica and Catlin high school efforts. Voters decided in November of 2014 to agree to a new consolidation effort between Jamaica High School and Catlin High School. The vote to approve consolidation in Catlin passed 784 – 587 while the Jamaica school district voters approved the proposal 550-397.

The Catlin high school building would continue to serve as the Salt Fork High School building. The Jamaica High School building would now become the Salt Fork Junior High School (grades 6 – 8).

ATHLETICS

The Sidell Jamaica High School “Cardinals” athletic program has a very storied and successful history. From the Fall of 1955 through the Spring of 1995 the school’s athletes earned honors on local and state-wide levels. The most successful team accomplishment was the girls basketball team of 1979-80 who placed 2nd in the IHSA Class ‘A’ state tournament.

Sidell Jamaica began a coop of all sports teams in the Fall of 1995 with Catlin High School. The result was the creation of the Salt Fork “Storm” coop team. This coop provided even more memorable seasons for the athletes and fans of Sidell Jamaica. Included was several great seasons in multiple sports, highlighted by the IHSA State Class ‘1A’ boys basketball championship won in the 2009-10 season.

The History of Sidell High School

Sidell (population 626) is located in lower-eastern Illinois in the southwestern portion of Vermilion County. Danville is located about 15 miles to the northeast of Sidell.  Sidell sites quietly on the intersection of the county roads of E 300 North and N 600 East.  The Missourri Pacific Railroad cuts directly through the middle of Sidell.  A branch of the Little Vermilion River flows by the western edge of town while the Archie Creek flows to the south of town.

The following EXCELLENT history of the Sidell school system was sent to us by Bill Daugherty.  It was taken from the The Sidell Reporter from about 1972. The information was furnished to the newspaper by Frank Gilroy who came to Sidell in 1908. He was a blacksmith and a Baptist preacher.:

“Since Sidell is one of the younger towns of the area, it has no background of “subscription schools” and log schoolhouses. The earliest settlers here sent their children to Archie, Gilead, Barnett and Indianola, where schools had been established since 1843. After grade school, a few attended seminaries, which offered, advanced education on the basis of tuition of $1.25 per month per pupil.

The first school in Sidell was established in the upper room of the old depot building about 1883 or 1884. Presumably in the late 1880s a two-room brick building was erected on’ the west side of Chicago street where the Rose Bailey home is now located. A Mr. Graham was hired as principal, and the two other teachers were Ida Ames and Zua Spry. In 1892, a second story was added and a two-year high school was established under a Mr. Blankhurst as principal.

In 1894, Clay F. Gaumer became principal, and in 1897 a third year was added to the high school and it continued as a three-year high school until 1908, when the fourth year was added under Prof. Sherman Cass. Two rooms had been added to the building in 1905, making it a six-room school. Sometime within this range, some of the classes were held in the upper story of the Old Hatchery building, south of Courson’s Store. During the years 1892 to 1908, the public school board of District No. 194 operated the high school.

As early as 1895-96, an attempt was made to organize a high school district, but the effort was defeated at the polls. It was later accomplished, in 1912, through petitions circulated by Dr. Ceo. B. Jones and Harley Beaman. The district of 39 sections was called Sidell Township High School District No. 21. The first board of the new district was elected in April, 1912, and named A. Cathcart as president. Other members were; H. L. Baum, Ralph Herron, J. C. McDowell, M. A. Dickerson, A. M. Miller and Max Holton.

In the beginning, the high school was established in two rooms of the grade school building, paying a rental of $25 per month. In 1912, a bond issue of $20,000 was approved for a new high school building, payable at $2,000 per year for 10 years. Three sites were available for the building: the first, east of the Christian Church the second, the old three-story hotel across the street east of the bank, and the third, its present location.

The new building was occupied in the spring of 1913, under Sherman Cass as principal, his salary being $117.50 per month for 12 months. Two other teachers were hired at $75 per month. The completed building cost approximately $25,000.

The first ‘graduates of the four-year high school were: Walter Carrell, Hazel Williams, and Caryl Holton. The first janitor of the building, George Overman, was paid $45 per month for 12 months.

The new gymnasium was built in 1925 under Leroy Hooker as principal, at a cost of $27,000. The school was admitted into the North Central Association in 1916 when V. W. McIntyre was Principal. W. J. Goreham became principal in 1927 and served until it ceased to be a separate high school in 1955, when it was consolidated with Fairmount and Indianola high schools to form Jamaica High School.

Principals serving during its history of 63 years were:

E. W. Blackhurst, 1892-94

Clay F. Gaumer, 1894-1903

J G. Slater, 1902-3

Robert Kent, 1903-4

R. W. Sprinkle, 1904-6

J. N. Kirby, 1906-8

Sherman Cass 1908-14

V. W. McIntyre, 1914-17

Mr. Nichols, 1917-18

Mr. McManus, 1918-19

J. R. Bouton, 1919-25

Leroy Hooker, 1925-27

W. J. Goreham, 1927-55

The first official coach of the high school was H. C. Stotler in 1916: The organization of the Consolidated Jamaica High School was effected in 1953, but did not become operative until 1955. Upon the consolidation, Mr. Goreham became the first superintendent of the Jamaica High School.”

In 1955 the towns of Sidell, Fairmount, and Indianola agreed to pool their high school resources.  The effort resulted in the creation of the Jamaica School District.

The high school for Jamaica District was set in Sidell.  The fate of the original Sidell school building is being sought.

Athletics

The Sidell High School boys competed in basketball, probably baseball and track as well. The Englishj Department at the school also got into the State Competition “act” by winning medals in the Speech tournament. School team nickname, colors, fight song, team records, and coach’s names are all items we are searching for.

Boys Basketball

The hardwood courtmen of 1939 had an incredible run.  These boys made it to the final round of 64 winning both their District title and Regional title.  Sidell stayed competitive to the very end winning another District title the year before they merged with Indianola and Fairmount.

Lake Sibley is located on the north side of town. The Norfolk & Western Railroad also lays its tracks through Sibley. Sibley is located about 35 miles east and a little north of Bloomington.

The town of Sibley is named after Hiram Sibley, who bought a good portion of land from Michael L. Sullivant in 1877. Sullivant was a farmer whose corn crop was well noted. The town was originally named Sullivant but was changed to Sibley in 1880. One feature of the town in the late 1800’s was a corn crib so large that it was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records at the time, and was torn down in 1965.

Sibley residents began a school system for their children in the late 1800’s. In 1874, the first Sibley School building was erected. Classes for high school children were begun shortly after this. Sibley High School offered only freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Students seeking a high school diploma had to attend Gibson City Drummer Township High to finish their high school years.

Sibley, Illinois

This changed in 1918 when Sibley began offering a four-year high school education. It was this year also that a new school building was built in Sibley.  A gymnasium was added to the school in 1941. Sibley High School served the residents quite well for the next 31 years. In the late 1940’s (as with MANY small school districts), the state of Illinois put pressure on the smaller districts to consolidate. The residents of Sibley got together with their neighbors, Melvin, and created a new school district. The new district was started after the 1949 school year and was named the Melvin-Sibley School District.

The Sibley school building served the Melvin-Sibley School District until that district was also closed in 1993. The children of Sibley now complete all of their schooling in Gibson City as part of the Gibson City Melvin-Sibley School District.

Shumway High School

The History of Shumway High School

Shumway (population 217) is located in southeast central Illinois in the north central portion of Effingham County.  Shumway is situated about 4 miles northwest of the city of Effingham on Illinois Route 33.  Illinois Route 32 runs about a mile east of Shumway. County Roads 4 and 7 intersect in town as well.

The history of the town of Shumway is in need of research. We know through the Widepedia web address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shumway,_Illinois that Shumway at one time supported its own school system.  We also discovered a graduation program from the 1903 Shumway High School graduation ceremonies at the web address of http://genealogytrails.com/ill/effingham/shumwayhigh1903.html .

We know that the students of Shumway now attend school in nearby Beecher City.  There is also a grade school in Shumway that is a part of the Beecher City school District. Currently this is the extent of information we have. If you can help us fill in the many gaps please contact us at eganann@sbcglobal.net .

The History of Shobonier High School

Shobonier (population approximately 400) is located in southwestern Illinois in the southwestern portion of Fayette County. U.S. Route 51 serves as the eastern border of Shobonier. County Road 23 passes by the south side of town. Shobonier is located about 7 miles due south of Vandalia.

Shobonier was platted in 1855 along the Illinois Central Railroad. A nice historical newspaper article about Shobonier was submitted by Mary Jo Freeman. The article is titled “Many Changes in Shobonier Since 1844.” It was published on June 03, 2008 by Better Newspapers. In summary the article states the area in which the village of Shobonier is located was first settled in 1844. The village is said to be named after Francois Sho-bon-ier, a member of a Chicago Potawatomie Indian family. Shobonier had a population of 275. By 1911 this population had grown to 400.

The first school was established in approximately 1870. The first brick school building was constructed in 1893 and housed grades 1-8. In 1926 the school district purchased a building that once housed the post office and utilized it for a 2-year high school. In 1929 a 3-year high school course was established. In 1942 the decision was made to discontinue the 3-year high school in favor of busing children to nearby Vandalia for a 4-year high school course of study.

To read the article in full please click on the following link:  https://www.leaderunion.com/2008/06/03/many-changes-in-shobonier-since-1844/

The fact that Shobonier once hosted a school that offered high school classes was discovered by Roberta VanBriesen. Roberta found a PodCast in which a gentleman spoke of the former high school Districts of Fayette County. Among were the following:   Bingham, Brownstown, FarinaLa Clede, Ramsey, Shobonier, St. Elmo, St. James, and Vandalia. The underlined schools are now closed and have a page on this site.
