The History of Shumway High School
Shumway (population 217) is located in southeast central Illinois in the north central portion of Effingham County. Shumway is situated about 4 miles northwest of the city of Effingham on Illinois Route 33. Illinois Route 32 runs about a mile east of Shumway. County Roads 4 and 7 intersect in town as well.
The history of the town of Shumway is in need of research. We also discovered a graduation program from the 1903 Shumway High School graduation ceremonies at the web address of http://genealogytrails.com/ill/effingham/shumwayhigh1903.html .
We know that the students of Shumway now attend school in nearby Beecher City. There is also a grade school in Shumway that is a part of the Beecher City school District. We believe that the Shumway High School boys competed in basketball. We believe that baseball and track may have also been offered. SHS team colors, fight song, coach’s names, and records are needed to share on this site.
