The History of Brookport High School

Brookport (population 725) is located in far southern Illinois in the southeastern portion of Massac County.  Brookport is situated on the banks of the Ohio River and is connected to Paducah, Kentucky via the U.S. Route 45 bridge.  An unnamed creek passes through the west side of town.  According to  http://www.iltrails.org/massac/towns/brookport.html Brookport was “laid out” in 1850 and incorporated in 1855.  First named Brooklyn, Brookport began as a small community which grew immensely with the building of a railroad through town. Brookport reached a population peak at 1,443 in 1910 and had over 1,000 residents through the 2000 census.

The history of the educational attributes of Brookport are in need of research.  It is probable that schooling was available to the younger students early on in the town’s growth.  A high school was probably in place by the very late 1800s.  Brookport High School served the community for several years. The late 1970s brought with them consolidation talks with Brookport’s neighbor and rival to the northwest, Metropolis.  This effort was realized in 1981 with the creation of the Massac County School District.

The following information was sent to us by former Brookport resident Jeff Rankin:

“As a youngster in the mid-1980s I attended Brookport Elementary School, and my father was a graduate of Brookport High School (Class of 1974). After the Brookport and Metropolis high schools were consolidated into Massac County High School in the early 80s the Brookport high school building then became Brookport Elementary School. Meanwhile the building that had housed Brookport elementary (directly across the street from the high school building) sat unused except for storage and for the restrooms (which we would have to use at times, as the old high school/now elementary school building’s restrooms were located in the basement, which tended to flood with too much rain). Both school buildings were razed in the last decade (around 2002 or 2003 if I’m not mistaken) and now a completely new building houses Brookport Elementary School. The only remaining building from the old school is the gymnasium/cafeteria, which was purchased by the City of Brookport and is now used for various functions (there was, for example, a local pro-wrestling promotion that held events in the gymnasium for a time).”

Thank You to the Brookport Library and Judy Askew

The high school for the Massac County District was located in Metropolis.  Brookport still hosts an elementary school as part of the Massac County District.

Brookport Library serves the community as a volunteer organization.  The supporters of this library have a developed a book regarding the history of Brookport and its former school.  The library continues to support the former high school’s memories by displaying graduation photos from 1945 through 1981. To purchase a copy of this book contact Judy Askew at daskew5@verizon.net .

Athletics

Brookport High School had some great seasons in boys basketball (www.ihsa.org).  This is, however, the only sport listed on the IHSA website.  We believe that Brookport High also offered the boys sports of baseball and track as well as the girls sports of basketball, volleyball, and track.  School team colors, school fight song, and information on the other sports offered at BHS are all being sought.

Boys Basketball

Four Regional titles and one District title hi-lighted the Brookport High School boys basketball success.  The IHSA website has a very thorough listing of all the BHS seasons from 1935-36 through the school’s closing in 1980-81.  The better season records and coach’s names are listed below. Scores for the boys basketball regional and sectional tournaments listed below were located on a website titled “Illinois Postseason High School Basketball Scores.”

Information on the Regional Championship teams was supplied by Robert Lingle.

The History of Brooklyn High School

Brooklyn (population 200) is one of three towns in Illinois that has been so named.  This Brooklyn is located in upper-western Illinois in the northwestern portion of Schuyler County.  The town is located along Illinois Route 101 just east of Illinois Route 99.  The county seat of Rushville is about 10 miles to the southeast of Brooklyn (as the crow flies).

We are told that in its “hey day” Brooklyn had a population of about 500.  Three gas stations and a couple of grocery stores were supported by its residents and surrounding smaller communities and farm people through the 1970s.  As with many small towns, the small businesses eventually closed.  Brooklyn’s population has steadied at around 200 residents.

The residents of Brooklyn began an educational system for their children in the early years of its growth.  We believe a grade school was established in the late 1800s.  A high school curriculum likely followed shortly after, possibly not until the early 1900s though.  Brooklyn High School served the town of Brooklyn and the surrounding farm families for many years.  The school building in town housed both the grade school and the high school classes.

The late 1950s and early 1960s brought about consolidation talks with the county seat of Rushville.  We are advised it was in the spring of 1967 that these talks became a reality.  Brooklyn High School closed her doors at that time.  Students were then bussed to Rushville for their educational needs.

The Brooklyn High School building has been torn down.

Athletics

We have been told there was a basketball program for boys at Brooklyn High.  It is quit possible that baseball and track may have been offered as well.  We are currently in search of the school fight song, team records, and coach’s names of the teams that graced the courts and fields of Brooklyn High’s storied past.

James Lantz provided us with this bit of information on the Brooklyn High School athletic program:

“Brooklyn High School did in fact have basketball, track, and baseball programs.  I was in Littleton H.S. and we competed with Brooklyn, CamdenHuntsvilleBrowningFredrick, and other three-year high schools.”

Girls Basketball

The ladies competed in basketball with other schools in the area, at least in the 1930s for certain. An article in the Macomb Daily Journal, written February 1, 1933, was located by Beau Spencer. It states the following:

“The Brooklyn girls quintet, one of the strongest girls basketball teams in this section, is to meet the Adair girls team in a basketball program at the Industry High School gym tomorrow night.  The Brooklyn team has lost only one game in three seasons.  The Adair team has not lost a game in two years, though the McDonough team has not played as strong opponents as Brooklyn.”

Extra-Curricular Activities

We know that sports were not the only “game” in town at Brooklyn High.  It is probable that class plays, FFA, FHA, GAA, Band, and Chorus were all a part of the BHS experience.  If you have ANY information on these or other activities offered at Brooklyn High School please contact us at the address listed below.

Memories

From former student Colene Henderson:

“Brooklyn School had very special teachers that taught 3 grades in one room….all

classes.  Memories of this school will always be with me. It was a building of many happy moments. This school is such a pleasure to think about….very nice memories.”

From former student Jim Lantz:

” My mother (Edna B. Lantz) taught in the grade school before I was born in 1926, and I attended grade school there through the first four grades.  My teacher was Neva Reeves who later married Jesse Bartlett who was also a teacher and principle.”

From former student Milly Geisler:

“I attended Brooklyn High School from 1940-1943 and received a good education.  The principal was Mr. Lawrence CampMiss Aletha Linebaugh was English and Math teacher, Miss Woods taught some classes and Mrs. Chestnut was a teacher.

I still have the BHS yearbook, “Echoes of 42-43”.  We had parties, picnics, a Christmas program, and a play “Good Gracious Grandma”. We also had a band and athletics included baseball, basketball and track.”

**From Donna Hite Young and Polly Lantz Smith:

“The following information was told to me by my uncle, Merle Lantz:

The first Brooklyn Band was organized in 1871.

The photo of the band (below) was taken circa 1904. Dr. J.E. Camp (clarinet) was the director. They practiced in the old town hall. Merle was a small boy, he remembers going with his brother, C.W. Lantz (alto horn), to sit, watch, and listen.

The band stand was two stories high — the band played on the top floor. Speakers, master of ceremonies, kid’s speaking pieces, etc, were on the bottom floor.  A favorite Halloween trick for Brooklyn boys was to tear down a buggy and put it together on the top story.

On Decoration Day the band marched to the cemetery, playing as they marched.

The band performed concerts in other towns.  My grandfather, Thomas Lantz, drove the horses that pulled the band wagon (painted and decorated like a circus wagon).  The band played while they rode through the country, often over muddy roads.

The bass drum for this band is now on display in the Rushville Museum.”

The History of Brocton-Redmon High School

Brocton (population 322) is located in lower-eastern Illinois about 20 miles northeast of Charleston, home of Eastern Illinois University.  The road leading to and from Brocton is Illinois Route 49.  County Road 8 also leads to Brocton. The Norfolk & Western Railroad travels through town as does the Hog Branch of the Embarrass River.  Brocton sits quietly in west-central Edgar County.

Redmon (population 199) is located in the east-southeastern portion of Illinois.  The town is approximately 60 miles east of Decatur on Il. Route 133.  The town is in the west central portion of Edgar County, about 16 miles west of the Indiana/Illinois state line.  The Prairie Central Railroad runs through the middle of town and the north branch of the Hickory Grove Creek runs along the northern and eastern edges of town.

These two towns supported their own high schools until the consolidation effort of the 1940s came about.  In 1952 the school districts of Brocton and Redmon agreed to pol their educational resources to create the Brocton-Redmon School District.

Brocton-Redmon High School, we believe, was located in the original Brocton High School building.  Brocton-Redmon HS served the commmunites for 20 years until a second consolidation movement swept the area in the late 1960s.  Brocton-Redmon High School combined with Young America High School in Metcalf and, along with the town of Hume, created the Shiloh School District in 1968.  The high school was erected and remains near the town of Hume.

The Brocton-Redmon school building is no longer used as a school. Our good friend Sue Sallee advises us the school building has been converted to an apartment building and maintains a useful purpose for the town of Brocton.

The History of Brocton High School

Brocton (population 322) is located in lower-eastern Illinois about 20 miles northeast of Charleston, home of Eastern Illinois University.  The road leading to and from Brocton is Illinois Route 49.  County Road 8 also leads to Brocton. The Norfolk & Western Railroad travels through town as does the Hog Branch of the Embarrass River.  Brocton sits quietly in west-central Edgar County. Brocton was established along the lines of the Toledo, St. Louis, & Western Railroad. It was named after Brocton, Mass., a town where many of the railroad workers originated from. The post office for Brocton was set up in 1882.

The history of Brocton High School is in need of research. A high school curriculum most likely was established by the early 1900s.  We do know that Brocton High School served the town for about five decades, possibly longer. The late 1940s saw the consolidation effort in Illinois take place. This brought the neighboring towns of Brocton and Redmon together for consolidation talks.  The result was the formation of the Brocton-Redmon School District.  This effort was finalized for the 1952-53 school year.

Brocton-Redmon High School was located, we believe, in Brocton.  Brocton-Redmon HS served the area for 20 years before consolidation led to its closure in 1968.  The Brocton school building stood the test of time through the year 2017. That year, sadly, the school was deemed in a state of disrepair and was demolished..

Boys Basketball

The basketball program at Brocton High was a force to be reckoned with in their neck of the woods.  A Regional title in the 1936-37 season was the hi-light of the school’s athletic history.  BHS followed this with a pair of Distict titles (www.ihsa.org).  All three titles were won in three consecutive seasons.  Great job Brocton High School boys of the late 1930s!!  Team records and coach’s names of these and other great BHS teams are being sought. Several scores from the IHSA Tournament involving Brocton were located on a site titled “Illinois Postseason Basketball Scores.” These scores are listed below.

Coach Pete “PJ” VanHorn was said to be the leader of several great teams in the 1930s at Brocton High School.  Coach VanHorn can be viewedin the picture to the right with his “midget” basketball team of 1933.

The History of Broadwell High School

Broadwell (population 169) is located in the central portion of Illinois in the west central area of Logan County.  Broadwell is located just east of Interstate Highway 55 about 6 miles south of Lincoln. The original and famous U.S. Route 66 traveled through Broadwell as does County Highway 12.  The Southern Pacific Railroad line passes through Broadwell too. Broadwell is best known for its once famous restaurant, the Pig Hip, which was a well-known stop along the orignal U.S. Route 66.

An nice history of the town of Broadwell can be read at the Wikipedia web address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadwell,_Illinois .  A summary of the history of the town, as found on this site, is as follows:

The town was established in 1856 and is named after one of its founders, William Broadwell. Broadwell was, at one time, a center for livestock and grain hauling.  The town has kept a fairly even population over the years.

Broadwell residents began a school system for their children very early in the town’s existence.  On a recent trip to Broadwell, we spoke with local historian, and owner of the now-closed Pig Hip Inn restaurant, Ernie Edwards. Ernie told us that he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1936 and moved to Broadwell in 1937.  He recalls that through the 1930s and 1940s Broadwell School offered a 2 year high school course of study. Students who wished to continue their education at a 4 year high school could do so at Lincoln High.  Broadwell High School likely was discontinued in the late 1940s as were all 2 and 3 year high schools in Illinois.

The Broadwell Grade School continued to serve the town and surrounding area for many years more.  It was in the late 1980s or possibly the early 1990s that Broadwell Grade School also closed her doors.  The Broadwell school building today serves as an apartment building and parts of it can be rented for parties.

The History of Broadlands A-B-L High School

Allerton (population 293) is located in east-central Illlinois in the far southwestern corner of Vermilion County.  A portion of the town is also located in southeastern Champaign County placing Allerton about 20 miles southeast of Champaign/Urbana.  Illinois Route 49 is the main roadway leading you to and from town and intersects with County E 300 North at Allerton.

Broadlands (population 312) is located in east-central Illinois about 15 miles southeast of Champaign.  Broadlands was platted in the southeast corner of Champaign County.  County Roads 200 and 2500 intersect in Broadlands about two miles west of Illinois Route 49.

Longview (population 153) is located in east-central Illinois about 15 miles southeast of Champaign.  Longview is located in a true country setting.  The main roads leading to the Champaign County town include County Highway 12 and County Road E 100 N.

All three towns have a page on this site and at one time had their own high schools.  It was in the 1950s that decisions were made to consolidate the three town’s educational efforts into one school district.  This effort took place in 1953.  The result was the creation of the Allerton-Broadlands-Longview, or A-B-L, School District.

Broadlands was the town located in the center of the three villages and was chosen as the site ot the high school.  A-B-L High School served the three communities and the great surrounding farm lands for about 35 years.  The year was 1989 when their neighbor to the north, Homer High School, chose to consolidate with Broadlands A-B-L.  This effort resulted in the renaming of the A-B-L School District to the Heritage School District.

Broadlands school building remains the home to this “new” district.  The grade school for the Heritage School District is held in Homer.

Athletics

A-B-L High School had some nice success in athletics over the years.  The sports of boys basketball, football, and girls track are all noted on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org).  We are confident that boys track, girls volleyball, and girls basketball were also offered.  Team records and coach’s names are among the many items being sought for the better teams not listed below.

Football

A-B-L High School had a few nice football seasons which included three trips to the IHSA Class 1A Playoffs.  Also included were several above-.500 winning percentage seasons.  This is excellent for a school of three small towns whose total population today is 758! The overall record of the football program from 1974 through 1989 was a not to shabby 81 wins and 51 losses! The best of the A-B-L seasons and playoff results are listed below.

Broadlands High School

The History of Broadlands High School

Broadlands (population 312) is located in east-central Illinois about 15 miles southeast of Champaign.  Broadlands was platted in the southeast corner of Champaign County.  County Roads 200 and 2500 intersect in Broadlands about two miles west of Illinois Route 49.  The Missourri Pacific Railroad runs a line to Broadlands and the East Branch of the Embarrass River flows through town as well. Broadlands was established in 1887.

The history of the  Broadlands school system is in need of research.  It is probable, though not confirmed, that Broadlands had some sort of high School curriculum in place by the late 1800s, certainly by the early 1900s.  Broadlands High School served the community and surrounding farm kids for over five decades.  In the late 1940s and early 1950s the major consolidation sweep that struck Illinois caught up to the small towns in the southeastern Champaign County area.  By the early to mid 1950s this effort led to the consolidation of the high schools from AllertonBroadands, and Longview.  It was in 1953 that this effort was finalized and became known as the A-B-L School District.  The high school for the new district was located in Broadlands.

Broadlands A-B-L served the three communities nicely until the late 1980s. At that time Homer High School joined the ABL District and the name was changed to the Heritage School District.  Heritage High School remains in the Broadlands High School building today.
