The History of Broadlands High School
Broadlands (population 312) is located in east-central Illinois about 15 miles southeast of Champaign. Broadlands was platted in the southeast corner of Champaign County. County Roads 200 and 2500 intersect in Broadlands about two miles west of Illinois Route 49. The Missourri Pacific Railroad runs a line to Broadlands and the East Branch of the Embarrass River flows through town as well. Broadlands was established in 1887.
The history of the Broadlands school system is in need of research. It is probable, though not confirmed, that Broadlands had some sort of high School curriculum in place by the late 1800s, certainly by the early 1900s. Broadlands High School served the community and surrounding farm kids for over five decades. In the late 1940s and early 1950s the major consolidation sweep that struck Illinois caught up to the small towns in the southeastern Champaign County area. By the early to mid 1950s this effort led to the consolidation of the high schools from Allerton, Broadands, and Longview. It was in 1953 that this effort was finalized and became known as the A-B-L School District. The high school for the new district was located in Broadlands.
Broadlands A-B-L served the three communities nicely until the late 1980s. At that time Homer High School joined the ABL District and the name was changed to the Heritage School District. Heritage High School remains in the Broadlands High School building today.
