The History of Stiritz High School

Stiritz (population approximately 75) is located in far south-central Illinois in north-central Williamson County.  Stiritz is a small village located about 5 miles north of Marion and 15 miles northeast of Carbondale. Stiritz is almost a suburb of Johnson City, located just 1/2 mile to the southeast.  Stiritz is about two long blocks to the north and south and two regular blocks wide to the east and west.  Interstate Highway 57 runs just to the east of town.  Stiritz Road connects the town to Illinois Route 37 one mile to the east. Stiritz is named after a man named Albert Stiritz and was established in the early 1900s.

Stiritz High School was likely in place by the early 1900s.  Stiritz High probably lasted through the 1940s.  At some point Stiritz High School was closed, our guess being in the late 1940s.  The students of Stiritz now attend school in nearby Johnson CIty.

Athletics & Extra Curricular Activities

The Stiritz High School Rangers were a real high school basketball team in Illinois High School history.  We believe that the boys competed in baseball and possibly track as well.  School team colors, team records, and coach’s names are also items we would like to add to this page.

We know that the Stiritz High School experience did not rest soley in the gym or on the field.  We believe that many other “extra-curricular” activities were offered as part of the educational plan too.  FFA, FHA, GAA, band, chorus, and many other events probably helped to make the Stiritz school a special one.

Memories

**From Richard Lentz:

“My mother, Prather, attended/graduated from Stiritz in mid 1930s. I’m not sure, because I can’t find any records. Her Collins/Cobb cousins also attended, and I also did not know it was a high school.”
