The History of Woodland High School

Woodland (population 319) is located in upper-eastern Illiniois in the east-central portion of Iroquois County. County Road 1400N is the main roadway to and from Woodland. Illinois Route 1 passes about 2 1/2 miles to the east of Woodland.  The Union Pacific Railroad passes through Woodland as well and was likely instrumental in the town’s early growth. Woodland sits about three miles south of Watseka.

The Woodland town history is in need of research. It is likely the townspeople of Woodland began a school system for their children in the late 1800s. A high school was likely in place sometime in the early 1900s. In 1901, the above pictured two story brick school house was built on the north side of Woodland. It served as a two year and then a 3 year high school as well as a grade school until 1943. At that time the high school students went to either Milford or Watseka High school.

The original Woodland HS building has been razed. A newer school building has taken its place and is known as Woodland Elemetary School. Photos of this building are available below. The school serves as a 5th and 6th grade facility as part of the Watseka School District..

Athletics

The Choppers, though probably never more than a two or three-year high school, competed with other high schools in boys basketball. We believe the school competed in baseball, and possibly track, as well. School team colors, fight song, coach’s names, and team records are all items we are looking for.

Basketball

The IHSA website lists the following information regarding the Woodland HS basketball program. Unfortunately, only the coaches names are available.

1937-38            Coach Ben Walrich

1938-40            Coach Lloyd Brown

Extra-Curricular Activities

Did this small school offer other activities for the kids? Were FFA, FHA, GAA, school plays, school dances, chorus, and band also part of the Woodland High School experience?  If you have the answer to these questions, along with other memories you would like to share, read the paragraph below.

The History of Woodhull High School

Woodhull (population 809) is located along Interstate Highway 74 at the intersection with Il. Route 17.  This places Woodhull in southwestern Henry County approximately 20 miles north and a little east of Galesburg. Mud Creek runs throught the center of town.

The first school was started in Woodhull in 1859, with a newer building replacing it in 1869. A High School was started in 1878, with the first graduating class of WHS commencing in 1879: William Richards, Effie Epperson, Nellie Russell, Ella Neeley and Lizzie Ridenour. The next graduating wouldn’t commence until 1882.

An 1894 fire destroyed the 1869 building, and the school was rebuilt. In 1925 the Woodhull HS building pictured above was completed.

A consolidation effort between nearby Alpha (also on this site) and Woodhull took place in the late 1940s.  Alpha and Woodhull High Schools were deactivated and the “Alwood” School District #225 was formed.  The high school was located in the Woodhull H.S. building until the current Alwood building was built in 1957.

The original school building is still in use as the Alwood Junior High School.  It sits adjacent to the current Alwood High School building.

Woodhull High School offered boy’s basketball, track and field, baseball, football and even girls basketball for a short time during the turn of the century. There are several accomplishments listed for the Alwood HS kids. If you have any information regarding the athletic program at Woodhull HS please send us a note.

Football

The excellent 1946 season for Woodhull High School was researched and provided to us by our own Tom Sikorski!  The Cardinal grid-iron greats of 1947 followed up the 1946 season with yet another Corn Belt Conference Championship.  The photo below was sent to us fron Kent Nelson who scanned the photo from his father’s 1948 Woodhull HS yearbook. Kent’s dad, Art Nelson, is in the front row (#26) and was an all-conference selection in this, his junior year.

The History of Wolf Lake High School

Wolf Lake (population approximately 400) is nestled in far southern Illinois about 20 miles southwest of Carbondale (as the crow flies) and 3 miles east of the Mississippi River in western Union County.  Scenic Illinois Route 3 runs directly though Wolf Lake.  The Missouri Pacific Railroad line lays parrallel to Route 3.  The town is named after the long and slender body of water known as Wolf Lake which lays to the northeast of the town of Wolf Lake.

A bit of information on the town’s history can be read at http://www.shawneeheartland.com/towns.html.  Wolf Lake probably started an educational process for its children in the late 1800s, possibly the early 1900s. The town’s high school served its children well and by itself through quite likely the late 1940s to mid-1950s.  At some point in this time period Wolf Lake joined forces with its neighbors McClure, Grand Tower, Ware, and East Cape to form what is to this day known as the Shawnee School District.

The high school for the new District was located just south of Wolf Lake and keeps a Wolf Lake address. The fate of the original Wolf Lake high school building is not known. The grade school building (possibly the old HS building) is now used as a private business which utilizes heavy machinery.

Wolf Lake High School Quick Facts

Year closed:                           late 1940s / mid 1950s

School Fight Song:                 unavailable

AthleticsWolf Lake High School offered the boys sports of basketball and baseball.  This is evidenced by their Distric titles won in each sport. Football ws also thought to be offered as late as the late 1950s, possibly even later. It is also possible that track & field was also offered.  We are in need of the team nickname, school colors, school fight song, and conference affiliation of Wolf Lake High School.

Boys Basketball

As with nearly all small towns of its day, Wolf Lake High School loved its basketball program.  The team’s had a real nice run in the late 1930s winning three District Championships.  The program followed this with its only Regional Championship in 1941. Before their District Championship run, according to an area newspaper account, Wolf Lake didn’t have a gymnasium prior to the mid-1930s. Unfortunately the team records and coaches names of these and other great Wolf Lake HS roundball teams are not available at this time.

1937-38                District Champions

1938-39                District Champions

1940-41                Regional Champions

Boys Baseball

The boys of 1941 proved to be a talented group of athletes.  The only District title for baseball was won during the 1940-41 school year. This group doubled their winnings from the basketball season listed above.  Again, the coach’s name and team record are not available.

Witt, Illinois

The History of Witt High School

Witt (population 991) is located in northeastern Montgomery County in south-central Illinois. Illinois Route 16 and the Conrail Railroad run side by side on an angle through the center of town. A branch of the East Fork of the Shoal Creek flows through the north side of Witt. For reference sake, Witt is about 40 miles southeast of Springfield. A nice website for information on the town of Witt was provided to us by Jim Miller and is located at the web address of www.wittillinois.com .

Witt has a long and storied history of supporting education in its town. The Witt High School building pictured above served the children of Witt from 1906 (the year it was built) until the closing of the high school in 1997. Witt High School was originally established as a three year high school in 1906 but added a fourth year by 1909, which made the first graduating four-year class from Witt High was the class of 1910. Declining enrollment and finances finally took their toll and Witt HS was deactivated. Upon the high school’s closure, the kids of Witt are now educated as part of the Hillsboro School System.

A nice history of the Witt School system can be found at the web address of http://www.hillsboroschools.net/schools/witt05/history.htm .

Our good friend Phil Shadid shared with us this sad bit of informatino regarding the Witt School building as see in the Springfield State Journal-Register, March 4, 2010:

“The Hillsboro School District will close Witt Elementary School (the former high school) at the end of the 2010 school year. Budget problems have necessitated the closing of the school, which in 2010 had only 78 students and six teachers.  Those students affected by the closing will attend school at either Coffeen Elementary or Hillsboro Elementary. The Witt school may possibly be offered for sale.”

Athletics

Witt High School earned its nickname, the “Speedboys”, because of their style of playing boys basketball in the 1920s.  The style paid off and will be written about below.  Witt competed in the Egyptian -Illini Conference and later the Central Illinois Conference.  Witt High School offered baseball, basketball, cross-country, and track for the boys and softball, basketball, cross-country, and volleyball for the girls.

The sports that are written about on the IHSA web site are written about here below.  If you have more information regarding the Witt athletic successes please send us the information via e-mail.

Boys Basketball

The Witt High School Speedboys of 1927-28 were the classic reason for the one-class system. The team brought home a Third Place trophy from the State Tournament!   The Speedboys, led by Coach Joseph Kilpatrick (in his only season at the school), beat Streator High School in the quarter finals before losing to Canton (eventual State Champion) by 2 points.  The Speedboys came back with a win in the third place game over Griggsville (also on this site).  The Speedboys came back the next year (1928-29) under Coach Lawrence Fornecker to make an ElIte Eight appearance before losing to Peoria Central High School.

The Witt High School boys basketball program had many great seasons through 1960. In fact the Speedboys won an additional 12 District titles besides the great seasons listed above.  There were some tough years to follow though as the team did not sport a winning record again until the 1988 season.  The best of the Witt Speedboys bassketball successes are listed below.  Coaches names and team records are posted when available.

*The gymnasium earned a title as a “cracker box” in that the end lines were only 8 inches from the walls requiring the placing of restraining lines in addition to the out-of-bounds lines.

*The 1979-80 team played in 5 overtime games during the season, winning one of them.

Girls Volleyball

The Witt High School Speedgirls volleyball program is the only other sport listed on the IHSA web site which can be researched. The girls had a strong head coach in Pat Powers who served from 1976 – 1988. The best three seasons under Coach Powers leadership are listed below.

1985-86     15 – 9         Coach Pat Powers

Other Sports Information Needed

If you can add any information regarding the cross-country, baseball, softball, and track programs at Witt High School, please drop us an e-mail.

Great Players

*Paul Chervinko, class of 1928 and a player on the Third Place winners, went to great baseball success, even playing for a time with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937-38.

*Glen Hobbie, class of 1954, was a star pitcher and played seven seasons of professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, establishing record of 16 – 13 in 1959.

New Windsor (population 720) is situated on Il. Rt. 17 seven and one-half miles east of US. Rt. 67. If you are unfamiliar with the area, New Windsor is about 23 miles (as the crow flies) south and a little east of the Quad Cities. New Windsor sits on the far east-central edge of Mercer County.  The town hosts an annual rodeo which draws competitors and spectators from all over the midwest.

Viola (population 956) is located in upper western Illinois on Iliniois Route 17 at the intersection of U.S. Route 67. The town sits in the eastern portion of Mercer County. Viola is situated about 20 miles south of the Quad Cities.

Winola High School is the result of a consolidation effort of the towns of Viola and New Windsor.  The consolidation of the two high schools took place before the 1952 school year began. The high school students recieved their education in the HS building in Viola.

Winola School District enjoyed four decades of many successes before being deactivated in 1988.  As a result of the deactivation the high school students from New Windsor and Viola now attend Sherrard High School in Sherrard. The Winola High School building still rises tall and proud in the town of Viola, though now used for private purposes.

Athletics

Very limited information is available on the IHSA web site regarding athletics offered at Winola High School.  Successes were only found in boys basketball, and boys and girls track.  It is probable that football, girl’s volleyball, and girl’s basketball were also offered.  Winola spent several years competing in the old Cornbelt Conference.  The IHSA success of the Winola teams is listed below.  Assistance is being sought regarding the many great Winola teams that did not bring home IHSA hardware.

Bill Mack was a Winola coach then. He went on to coach at Crystal Lake, then North Central College and, after he retired he volunteered as an assistant at Beloit. I imagine his record is available on the website for Hall of Fame coaches. It certainly wasn’t because of his Winola record that he made the Hall of Fame but in his defense we had a lot of injuries.

We know the Jets played football. So far this is the extent of the information we have obtained.

Evan Thomas tells us:

“The initial Winola football coach was Leo Traister, who had been at Viola prior to consolidation. He later moved to VIT and Eureka College. Bill Mack, now in the IHSA coaches Hall of Fame, began his career at Winola in 1960. I believe he was there 4 years.”

The 1976 yearbook shows that Winola High School also participated in girls volleyball. In that particular season in fact they were quite good at it!

MEMORIES

**From Evan Thomas:

“I grew up in New Windsor and attended Winola High School. Bill King came to New Windsor to coach in 1950 and continued as the Winola coach until the ’70’s I have several yearbooks with records from the late 50’s and 60’s.I will try to uncover some additional information.

The first Winola football coach was Leo Traister who had been at Viola and stayed after the merger. He moved over to VIT and then to Eureka College. The Winola qb, Ron (Butch) McCready, played for him at Eureka. Butch later coached at Roseville and Savannah before moving into administration.

One of my classmates at Winola, Bob Frase, was a letterman fencer at the U of Illinois. He won a Big Ten title and competed in NCAA tourney. I would guess he may be one of a very few Cornbelt grads who ever competed in collegiate fencing.

Also, the “new” high school in New Windsor was designed by Albert Heino, a Chicago architect who was married to my aunt Doris from New Windsor. After Al’s death she moved back to New Windsor and spent a number of years teaching in the Winola system.

It’s been a long time, but there are still great memories of days at Winola.”

**From Gordy L.:

“I love the concept of your site and I think I can be of some help.  Winola HS opened in 1952 (class of ’53 was the first graduating class). The school closed with the graduation of the class of 1988.”

Winnetka, IL (courtesy of http://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/default.htm)

The History of New Trier East High School

Winnetka (population: 12,419) is located along Lake Michigan 16 miles north of downtown Chicago in northern Cook County. Interstate 94 (also known as the Edens Expressway), US 41, Sheridan Road, Green Bay Road, and Hill Road are the major thoroughfares coming thru the area to take people to and from Winnetka, along with the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad. Up to 97 percent of the families whose incomes are based in professional or managerial occupations for companies and corporations that are based primarily in Chicago live in Winnetka.

The community’s beginnings go back to 1836 when a tavern (i.e. hotel/restaurant) was placed in the area by Erastus & Zeruah Patterson to connect Chicago with Fort Howard in Wisconsin near Green Bay. It grew slow but steadily and in 1854, the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad laid tracks on 300 acres west of the lakefront, which was named Winnetka (“beautiful place” in Native American terms) by Sarah Peck. The town was incorporated in 1869 as Charles Peck (Sarah’s husband, who was responsible for building the railroad thru Winnetka along with Walter Gurnee) donated land that would become known as the Village Green, east of today’s business district.

Winnetka made municipal improvements, beginning with a 119-foot tall brick water tower in 1870, then formed its’ own municipal electric plant in 1900. The community formed the Winnetka Caucus in 1915 to let citizens have a say in making the decisions that controlled the future of the community, and it remains in force today.

Educationally, Winnetka began to teach its students as early as 1856 when Sarah Peck organized the first private school. The first public school opened two years later and stayed on the site of today’s Village Green until Charles Peck donated the land to the community in 1869.

The name New Trier comes from the name of the town that most of the early settlers came from, Trier, Germany. The earliest-known high school came in 1890’s when the community had Winnetka High School, which was a member of the Cook County League in athletic competition during the 1895-96 school year only. In 1901, New Trier High School was opened by a Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. William Netstraeter, who served as a pastor of a church in nearby Wilmette and was its mayor for three terms.

The school building itself was designed by Norman Patten. As the school grew, it eventually had to be split into two schools because of overcrowding by 1965. New Trier was at 4,000 students at that point, and became New Trier East while a new campus was built in Northfield that would become New Trier West.

Due to declining enrollments thru the late-1970’s, the schools decided to revert back to being one school in 1981, using the Winnetka campus for sophomores, juniors, and seniors while Northfield had the freshmen. That arrangement changed in 1985 when the entire enrollment could be located in Winnetka, but the school board reopened the Northfield campus in 2001 for the freshmen when the numbers started back upward.

Here’s to our team, they’re the green and the grey.

Loyal and ever true whatever we can do.

Proudly wave the banner for our school.
Rah rah for old New Trier.

ATHLETICS

Like most schools, New Trier East offered many sports, and were successful in them as a member of the Central Suburban League. Football, basketball, baseball, cross-country, golf, swimming & diving, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, track, and wrestling were available for the male students. Girls could compete in badminton, field hockey, soccer, golf, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, and volleyball, although basketball must have been offered because there is no record of any records mentioned by the IHSA or thru an online publication written in 2003 by Mark Braun. If you have any other sports or details to add, please contact us at the address listed below.

BOYS’ SWIMMING & DIVING

You cannot mention New Trier East without acknowledging their swimming & diving program, which began in 1913 at New Trier under Chaucey Hyatt. It continued to build under Edgar Jackson (1918-1952), and continues even today in capable hands. The Indians finished at least sixth or better at 15 consecutive state meets under the tutelage of Dave Robertson and Eric Matz to continue the tradition with 10 state champions and numerous prep All-Americans. A great resource of information about the program’s history is available online thru the New Trier school website: http://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/athletics/sports/boys_swim/nthistory.htm.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING & DIVING

The girls were just as outstanding as the boys in the pool with a state championship and three second place finishes when the school was open as New Trier East. Betsy Lind won three individual state championships for East in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, while the 200 medley relay took home the gold in consecutive years. It is interesting to note that once East and West merged back together in 1981, New Trier won the next seven state titles!

GREAT JOB BY THE LADY INDIAN SWIMMERS!!!!

BOYS’ TENNIS

The Indians wielded their rackets to victories and a state championship during the schools’ first year of existence as New Trier East. In all, the school never finished below 5th place at the state meet during the time it was called New Trier East. One note of interest: once New Trier East & West merged back together, they won five of the next seven state titles between 1982-88 for coach John Schneiter.

EXCELLENT JOB BY THE INDIAN NETTERS!!!

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Consistancy was a key ingridient at New Trier East in almost any sport or activity as the school set its goals high, and the girls’ tennis program was no different. From 1972-79, the Lady Indian netters were among the top five at the state meet seven out of eight times…including 1976, when the school finished second without having a top finisher in either singles or doubles competition.

FOOTBALL

Beginning with legendary coach Walt Aschenbach and continuing to Eugene (Chic) Cichowski, the Indian football program was known in the northern suburbs as a respectable organization that competed in the Suburban League, winning six conference titles and going to the state playoffs three times when the schools was open as New Trier East.

The school contributed two graduates to the college and NFL ranks as Clay Matthews and Mike Kenn wore green and gray in their prep careers before moving up to successful and lengthy careers in the NFL. Both played together in Atlanta in the 1994, which was Kenn’s final season in 17 with the Falcons (a five-time Pro-Bowl selection), and Matthews finished his 19 year career in 1996. Matthews and Kenn were first-round NFL draft picks in 1978 and selected 12th and 13th, respectively, that year.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

After leading Stephen Decatur to a state title at a young age, John Schneiter moved on to New Trier and later New Trier East, where he would guide the fortunes of the Indian basketball program to success as the only boys’ basketball coach in school history (like Mel Sheets was at New Trier West). Among those successes were six regional championships, three sectional titles, two trips to the Elite Eight, and an appearance in the state AA championship game. As an all-tournament selection in the 1973 AA series, John Castino would use that a springboard towards a baseball career with the Minnesota Twins.

The History of Wing High School

Wing (population approximately 75) is located in upper-eastern Illinois in the southwestern Livingston County area. Wing was established on the Norfolk & Western Railroad line and sits on County Road E 1300 N one-half mile east of Illinois Route 47. This places Wing about 15 miles southeast of Pontiac.

The history of Wing is in need of research. The community appears to be an unincorporated hamlet whose biggest asset is its still-working grain elevator. What appears to be a former school building (pictured above) is located on the far southern edge of town, which had three class rooms with two classes in each room. We believe this served for sure as a 1-8 school and, possibly for a while, offering high school courses.

The first school located in Wing was opened in Pleasant Ridge Township (where the village sits) in 1858, while another school was opened the same year. In March 1949, a favorable vote took place to a school consolidation effort between the towns of ForrestStrawn, and Wing. This effort became a reality with the creation of the Forrest-Strawn-Wing School District.

The high school and grade school for the new district were located in Forrest. The Wing School served as a grade school for the Forrest-Strawn-Wing School District through 1966. It only served as a K-3 building in its later years before being closed in 1974.

Wing school annexed into Forrest-Strawn-Wing HS in the ’50s, but it’s last use was as a site for World Relief activities for the Apostolic Christian Churches of Forrest and Fairbury in the ’80s and ’90s. It served as a grade school for most of the ’50s thru ’70s. The photo above was taken in January of 2006.

The History of Wilmette Maria Immaculata Academy

Wilmette (population: 27,700) is located 14 miles north of downtown Chicago in Cook County along Lake Michigan. The community is among a group of suburbs that are part of an affluent area called the North Shore that serve as bedroom communities to the residents who live there while commuting to Chicago for work.

The community’s name comes from Antoine Ouilmette, who was a French-Canadian fur trader that married Archange, the daughter of Potawatomi Indian chief Sauganash. The trader was instrumental in getting many Native Americans that lived in the area to sign the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1829, which they agreed to vacate their lands in present-day Wilmette and Evanston.

Ouilmette was awarded 1,280 acres of that land in the same year that the treaty was signed. He would later sell the land to farmers and developers in 1848, and a pair of communities were formed under the names Gross Point and Wilmette. The latter would be incorporated in 1872, while the former was annexed to Wilmette two years later. On an interesting note, Evanston was nearly annexed to Wilmette in 1894, but the voters said no at the polls by just three votes!

Wilmette can be reached by taking the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad into town, or by traveling along the lake on Sheridan Road, or further inside the city on Ridge, Green Bay, or Wilmette Roads. US 41 and Interstate 94 pass a couple of  miles to the west.

Maria Immaculata Academy was opened in February 1916 by the Sisters of Christian Charity, which had moved their Motherhouse from Wilkes Barre, PA a short time prior to coming to the Midwest. The school’s main purpose was to be an admissions point for those young females who wished to become aspirants or had aspriations to joining the Sisters’ community. The school was small in enrollment (about 45 on average) and a part of the Christian Charity organization, along with the Motherhouse, Mallinckrodt High School, and the novitiate (those who were in the first step of professing their vows to the community). Mallinckrodt College (open from 1918 and became part of Loyola University of Chicago in 1991) was also part of the organization during that time.

According to information found by archives assistant Sr. Anastasia with the Sisters of Christian Charity while researching the school for this website, she reported:

When our Mother Foundress [Pauline von Mallinckrodt] inaugurated the work of the Congregation of teaching Sisters a century ago, she laid down the following norm in the Constitutions of the Congregation: “…from a thorough religious education flows the temporal and the eternal welfare of the individual and of society.”

In keeping with this norm, the curriculum of Maria Immaculata Academy is arranged to develop the student into the “true Christian” equipped to educate and discipline herself and ready to begin the preparation which will qualify her to form true Christian minds in young Americans. The curriculum is, of necessity, largely college preparatory… specific efforts are made by the teachers…to detect special aptitudes and abilities so as to insure the most effective placing and consequent training of each aspirant. [an aspirant is a girl of high school age desiring to enter religious life.] The program is so arranged that should an aspirant decide to leave at any time, it will be possible for her to continue her studies at any regular high school.

Since only such pupils are enrolled in our high school who come for the purpose of preparing for the consecrated life of service in the interests of youth, or better said, for the purpose of discovering whether they have the requisite qualifications for that life, the guidance program is different from that in a regular high school. During the successive stages of their preparation, the aspirants live in the convent under the direction of experienced, well-trained mistresses. These mistresses direct and guide them in becoming emotionally and socially adjusted to their new environment and train them in the ways of the consecrated life which they contemplate embracing after they have graduated from the academy.”

Maria Immaculata thrived at educating teenage girls thru the 1960’s and even shared instructors with Mallinckrodt HS, who were in the same building. Unfortunately, during the later part of the 1960’s, teaching orders started to have fewer girls join the communities, which led to not as many nuns teaching and, as a result, put a strain on many parochial school’s finances by having to hire lay teachers.

Sr. Anastasia stated in conclusion that “…beginning in June, 1968, the aspirancy was “temporarily” suspended. Only two applicants had been received for the aspirancy for September; the total enrollment would be 16 or 17 students. The original plan was to suspend the aspirancy for two years; however, after that period, it was not reopened.”

(Thank you to Sr. Anastasia for her information on this page!)

The building that housed Maria Immaculata Academy still stands today as a condiminum facility for senior citizens called Mallickrodt in the Park.

MEMORIES

**From Kathy McNally DeBock:

“The two years I spent as an aspirant with the Sisters were the most beautiful and happy days of my life.  I attended from 1965 through 1967.  The peaceful walk through the apple trees down to the cemetery and stations of the cross is incomparable to any place that I have found to pray in lay life. It was a wonderful life.  Thank you to all the sisters who helped us grow closer to God. I would have loved to have seen the building one more time before the condo conversion.”

**From Gloria Hinojosa:

“The year I attended the aspirancy was probably the most memorable of my life.  I would venture to say it was the most profoundly spiritual year I have ever experienced.  There will never again exist that spirit of community, that special, extraordinary celebration of holidays.  I even remember how we celebrated the passing of a Sister’s life.  And yes,  the  “cemetery and stations of the cross is incomparable to any place that I have found to pray in lay life. It was a wonderful life”  I totally agree.  The experience of living at Maria Immaculata in 1960-61 has been incomparable.  Hard to believe, it closed in 1968.  Guess I would have just made it out of being a postulant.”

The History of Wilmette Mallinckrodt High School

Wilmette (population: 27,700) is located 14 miles north of downtown Chicago in Cook County along Lake Michigan. The community is among a group of suburbs that are part of an affluent area called the North Shore that serve as bedroom communities to the residents who live there while commuting to Chicago for work.

Mallinckrodt High School was open for business as a centralized girls’ high school in the Archdiocese of Chicago in September 1923 by the Sisters of Christian Charity, which had opened up Maria Immaculata Academy in 1915 in the same location for those girls who were considering or had already decided to join the religious community, which had opened their location in 1915 after moving their motherhouse from Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.

The name Mallinckrodt comes from the founder of Sisters of Christian CharityPauline von Mallinckrodt, who was a daughter of a wealthy member of the German government. Mother Pauline (as she was known) also set up schools, day care centers, and hospice care in Germany before coming to the United States in the 1870’s. There have been steps taken to have her considered for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church, and in 1985, she was given the title of Blessed Pauline by Pope John Paul II.

In researching the school, we received the following information from Sr. Anastasia, who serves as the assistant archivist for the Sisters of Christian Charity’s Western Province location in North America at Wilmette (www.sccwilmette.org). This came from a yearly record that was kept on Mallinckrodt High School by the convent.

“Ever since the establishment of Maria Immaculata Convent, the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Christian Charity, at Wilmette, more or less frequent applications have been made for private and class lessons in various subjects. Music lessons, as well as private and class lessons in sewing have been given since the beginning of 1917. In one or the other instance private instruction was given in academic and commercial subjects. However, this arrangement did not prove practicable, and therefore it was discontinued.

There is no central Catholic high school for girls between the Immaculata High School on Irving Park Boulevard, Chicago, and the Holy Child High School at Waukegan. St. Scholastica’s Academy and Marywood School at Evanston are boarding schools taking a high tuition, and therefore making it practically necessary for a large percentage of the girls desiring high school education to attend the public high schools.

In the spring of 1923 the need for a central Catholic Girls’ High School for the North Shore district began to be emphasized….On the evening of May 10, Monsignor Kelley in company with Rev. F. Siedenburg, SJ, called at the Motherhouse saying he had been delegated by the pastors of the surrounding parishes to ask whether we might be willing to conduct the high school. …Mother Hyacinth had anticipated the situation, and had previously asked and received from Reverend Mother General permission to open a high school in the north wing of the Motherhouse.

…it was further decided to open with but two years of the high school course, the third and fourth years to be added in 1924 and 1925 respectively. On June 10 it was published in the churches of the territory involved that instructions from the Chancery ordered the announcement of the opening of Mallinckrodt High School for Girls in September; parents were urged to send their daughters to this school which promised to be the best high school on the North Shore, if not in Chicago.

Arrangements were made immediately to accommodate pupils of the I. and II. Year High School as well as of the first year of a two-year Commercial Course.

On the feast of the Holy Name of Mary, September 12, a High Mass marked the opening of the High School…

Number of pupils: 46 pupils registered for regular classes;

17 for Commercial,

5 for II. Year High and

24 for I. Year High

Sewing Department:  47 pupils

Music Department:   16 pupils

The Sewing and Music Departments were opened October 17th. [there was a further note under “Rates” that stated the fee for Sewing (if taken exclusive of the Regular Course), and a further note added: All Regular Students are encouraged to make Sewing an elective. If taken as such there is no additional charge.

UNIFORMS: On November 12, the students wore their uniforms for the first time. The Winter Uniform is a one-piece box plaited [sic] dress made of French navy blue serge, opening at the shoulders, to be slipped on over the head. Round neck and square yoke bound with black silk braid. Inlaid pocket. Belt made of same material as dress, 2 buttons in front. The whole set off prettily with white collar and cuffs edged with tatting. A long black silk tie. The Summer Uniform is an Alice blue with tan collar and cuffs; otherwise similar to winter uniform.

Monday, June 15, 1925 witnessed the graduation of twelve Commercial students, the first to leave our school. Since it had been planned that the first public commencement exercises should mark the graduation of the first High School class and entertainment was given in honor of the Commercial graduates.

May 27, 1926 witnessed the graduation of the second class of Commercial students to leave The Mallinckrodt. There were twelve graduates.

Tuesday, June 14th witnessed the first public commencement exercises of The Mallinckrodt, at which our first fourth year Academic students were graduated. His Eminence, George Cardinal Mundelein, Archbishop of Chicago, honored the occasion by being present…

One of the graduates of this first class – Florence Faber – is now known as Sister Pierre Faber. She will be 100 years old in March, 2008, and lives at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.”

Part of a transcript from a meeting states the reason for the closing of Mallinckrodt High School (in 1960): “Since Mallinckrodt High School was originally opened only in response to the request of Cardinal Mundelein to provide a high school for girls in the North Shore area, and since this need no longer exists [Regina Dominican H.S. had been built a half-mile distant from MHS] and since our aspirancy has grown to the extent that school and living conditions on the novitiate side are over-crowded, it was decided definitely to close the day school for girls in a year or two. This will free the Mallinckrodt classrooms for our aspirants and make it possible to expand our Mallinckrodt College facilities.”

The Mallinckrodt building is still intact today and even used as condominums that are called “Mallinckrodt in the Park.”

The History of Willow Hill High School

Willow Hill (population 250) is located in southeastern Illinois in the east-central portion of Jasper County.  Illinois Route 49 travels through Willow Hill and connects it to Illinois Route 33 just one mile to the north.  The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad passes by the north side of town.  The Hickory Creek flows through the northeast site of town as well.  The town, also known as the “W.H.”, is located about 30 miles southeast of Effingham.

The history of Willow Hill and its former school system are in need of research. An article found while scanning the Genealogy Trails web address of http://genealogytrails.com/ill/jasper/towns.html had this listing from 1884 for what I believe is the original Willow Hill:

“New Liberty – (Post office Willow Hill), in Willow Hill Township, was laid out August, 1854, and is seven and one-half miles due east of Newton, and is next in size to Saint Marie. It is a lively town, as in the last eighteen months the S., E. & S.E.R.R. and D., O. & O. R.R.R. have been built through the township, cross each other at the north edge of the town, which has given it new life. The town now has three stores keeping a good general stock of merchandise, one drug store, one grocery store, one hardware store, three restaurants, two blacksmith shops, three grain and flour dealers, one stock and grain dealer, two farming implement dealers, one butcher, one shoe maker, one milliner, one hotel, one good flouring mill, one carpenter and undertaker, one house carpenter, one police magistrate, two justices of the peace, a post-office, two depots and express offices, three physicians, and three hundred inhabitants, two churches, and one nice two-story brick schoolhouse. The town has doubled its inhabitants in two years, and they say all they want now is room, and to be let alone and where will they be in two years more?”

So we know that Willow Hill had a school in town in 1884.  We believe that high school classes were offered there by the late 1800s.  Willow Hill School class photos can be viewed at: http://genealogytrails.com/ill/jasper/schoolpix4.html#willowhill

We believe that Willow Hill High School existed at least into the late 1940s, possibly a while longer.  At sopme point Willow Hill residents agreed to close their high school and send the children to nearby Newton to continue their education.  Willow Hill is still host to an elementary school for the Newton school district.

There was recently a reunion for the Willow High School alumni

Memories and Information

From Rhonda:

“I live in Willow Hill, and have all my life (all 44 years!). I went to the school building in the picture. There’s a newer one beside it (not ‘new’, just  ‘newer’). I had kindergarten in the one in the photo, 1-4 in the newer one,and 5,6,7 in the one in the photo. Just before I went in the 8th grade they tore it down, which would have been 1978.

The OLD Willow Hill  School building still stands (it’s older than the one in your photo). It’s just down the road from the present school. My grandmother went to it,and if she were alive today, she would be in her 90’s.

A few different families have made a home out of it,but it’s probably not going to last a whole lot longer.

I’ve seen it for years, because it’s right across the road from the church I’ve went to all my life-Salem Missionary Baptist Church.  If you drove right through the middle of town, you would see it.

If you don’t live anywhere near here, I can take some pictures, and e-mail them to you of the old school building. It’s only a block and a half from my house!  I don’t know if it would be better after some of the leaves fall or not, because there are a lot of big trees close to the building.

The link you gave to click for Willow Hill  School photos were ones took in front of the OLD ‘still standing’  school building. I sent those photos to that website. They belonged to my grandmother. She was in each one.”
