The History of Arlington Heights Forest View High School

Arlington Heights (population 76,422) is located in northeastern Illinois in the northwestern portion of Cook County. The town was incorporated in 1836, making it one of Illinois oldest “villages” as well. When first established, the thought of ever becoming a “suburb” was not even considered. However, with the many travel innovations over the next 100 years, Arlington Heights expanded to become one of Chicago’s biggest suburbs.

When the first high school building was built in 1922 for Arlington Heights to accomodate its’ 101 high school kids, thoughts did not comprehend the inmmense future growth the town would have. By the late 1950s, the high school-aged population had grown to well over 2000 stiudents. Plans were soon made to build a new high school to relieve the pressure on the many-times expanded Arlington High School. In 1962 Forest View High School was created.

Forest View High School served the community for nearly 25 years. It was in the mid 1980s that talks of now-decreasing enrollment led to the closure of Forest View High School in 1986. The Forest View High School building was put to excellent use and still remains in constant usage today. Katie Phillips tells us the following about the former Forest View school building:

“The school is currently the home of two alternative high schools; Vanguard School (http://www.d214.org/schools/vanguard/index.htm) and  Forest View Alternative School (http://www.d214.org/schools/fvas/index.htm).”

Kids who attended Forest View High School in 1986 were given the choice of attending Elk Grove, Prospect, or Rolling Meadows high schools.

ATHLETICS

The town of Arlington Heights and the surrounding communities must have been loaded with talent. If you review the Arlington High School page, you might think there was no trophies left for the neighboring schools to win. The kids of Forest View High School proved this theory wrong. Forest View High School offered nearly every sport available on the IHSA web site (www.ihsa.org). Even more so, they won some type of IHSA hardware in nearly every sport they competed in!  Three State Championships and several (and I mean SEVERAL) top ten finishes in State Competition. This is not to mention the dozens of individual medals won by Forest View athletes. If you have any more information on Forest View such as great teams and their records, great coaches, great athletes, conference championship teams, etc., please write to us at anytime, we will update the below listed information.

GIRL’S BOWLING

Let’s talk State Championship teams first. The lady bowlers of Forest View High were the “kingpins” of the middle 1970s. In five consectutive seasons (1974 – 1978) the team finished, in order, First, Second, Second, First, and First!!!  An incredible run over a short period of time! The seasons and the accomplishments are listed below. Incredibly. only one individual, Jackie Sinkler, earned a state medal in being crowned a State Champion herself in the 1981-82 season.

There is a fairly complete history of the football program with team records from 1974-1985 available on the IHSA web site. It seems that the program was really hitting its stride toward the end. The 1985-86 Forest View grid iron greats nearly pulled off a State Championship of their own. Following an 8-1 regular season, the FVHS boys won their first four games of the playoffs before falling in the State Championship game to finish the season as the IHSA 5A runner-up. The better seasons of football as listed on the IHSA website are in turn listed below.

Arlington High School “Cardinals” – Cook County

Arlington High School
Arlington Heights, Illinois

Entrance – 1946 Photo

The History of Arlington High School

Arlington Heights (population 76,422) is located in northeastern Illinois in the northwest portion of Cook County. Arlington Heights is one of Chicago’s biggest suburbs and is called by the Wikipedia web site as Illinois’ biggest “village.” The city was incorporated in 1836 and at that time, was considered to be safely away from the hustle and bustle of Chicago.

The late 1800’s saw such a population boom in Chicago that soon Arlington Heights became a suburb. Transportation made this easy. The Chicago Northwestern Railroad made its way from the downtown area to Arlington Heights. The area really swelled from the 1920’s on and Arlington Heights has evolved into one of Chicago’s most successful suburbs. The town is probably best known for the Arlington Race Track where horse racing fans have been entertained for many years. For more on the history of the city of Arlington Heights, please check out http://www.vah.com/ .

The photos on this page and the information for the school system in Arlington Heights were taken from an excellent web site which can be viewed at www.arlingtoncards.com/. Web master Mark Bostrom has done an excellent job recording the history of his alma mater.

The year was 1922 when the residents of Arlington Heights and Arlington Township decided to build a new high school building for their growing area. A high school had been started back as far as 1907, holding classes in grade school buildings, then the district was formed in 1914. Construction on the new building was completed in 1923 and a total enrollment of 101 students began attending high school classes in the new building. A class of 10 students graduated in the first school year.

By 1928, an addition was added as the enrollment had swelled to 251 students, then in 1939, the enrollment had more than doubled (517) again and another addition was added to the building. Enrollment increased and building additions were made in 1946 (enrollment 669) and again in 1952 (enrollment 1,169). Major renovations were made to the school in 1956 and the official name of the school was changed to Arlington High School. Enrollment had swelled to 2,235 students. Review this timeline…from 101 students in 1922 to 2,235 students in 1956! The enrollment grew so large that District 214 had to build a separate Freshman Campus in Mount Prospect. However, the freshman campus lasted for only one year before that building became Prospect H.S.

Arlington High School flourished for the next 25 years including another renovation in 1980. In 1981, the local school board announced that two of its now eight high schools would be closed. In 1982, the board decided that Arlington High School would be one of the two; Forest View High School also located in Arlington Heights was the other school. The class of 1984 was the last to graduate from Arlington High. Students now attend one of three high schools in District 214; John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, or Rolling Meadows High School.

The school building was sold in 1984 to Christian Liberty Academy. The school is used in this capacity today as a K-12 facility.

Arlington HS Class Ring Found:

“I am trying to find the owner of a High School class ring that I found at Bangs Lake in Wauconda. The ring is gold with a rectangular red stone. It has two white or opal colored diagonal stripes across the stone. In the center is a large letter A, with smaller letters H and S below it. It is dated 1958. On the inside of the band, Josten 10K is stamped. I was hoping this ring was a graduation class ring from the old Arlington High School and that you might be able to help me find it’s owner. Being that this will be the 50th Anniversary of the 1958 graduating class, I know the owner of this ring would be delighted to get it back, as well as I. Thank you.”

GREAT JOB ARLINGTON THESPIANS!!!!

GIRLS’ GYMNASTICS

The history of the girls’ gymnastics program at Arlington High is one that probably repeated itself all over the state as girls athletics were sanctioned by the IHSA in the early 1970s’. The following information was supplied by former gymnast Beth (Kleinsmith) Anderson.

“The school year was 1972-73 when a young coach by the name of JoAnna Murdoch began her career at Arlington High. Coach Murdoch was hired as the girls’ gymnastics coach and later would coach the girls’ swimming team as well. The first few years the gymnatics programs at AHS and in the area in general were not very strong. It was obvious, however, that the movement to make the sport competitive was quite sincere. By the 1974-75 season, gymnastics programs were taken VERY seriously. Gymnastics academies were were opening up throughout the area and girls were taking advantage of the this to improve their skills. Being such a new venue, the IHSA at the time frowned upon this with a feeling of the academies being called “teaching schools,” and an improper source of learning. This rule lasted only a short time before being changed.

“The 1974-75 school year brought about one other significant change. Schools were allowed to set up “optional routines.” Until this year, coaches were given the routine their athletes had to follow, so each athlete on each team had to perform the same routine for each event. In 1974-75, coaches were allowed to create routines for their athletes to perform.

“From the 1972-73 through the 1975-76 school years, only conference level competition was enjoyed by the gymnastics programs. Arlington High was very successful in the MSL conference. It was in the 1975-76 school year this was changed to include regular State Meet Competition with Districts, Sectionals, and State Finals.

“The Lady Cardinals had some nice success in gymnastics. Their best seasons and individual medalists are listed below. Coach Murdoch should be acknowledged for her hard work and dedication to the school and its gymnastics program, truly one of the coaching pioneers of the sport.”

THE CORONETS

From Robert M. Jackson:

“I was searching your site for information on your girls Drill Team called the Coronets. I know several people that were members during the 70’s but I didn’t notice this activity mentioned? They were very strong competitors and won many competitions. I also believe the Physical Education teacher Lynn  Lindstrom was the creator and director of this group in the beginning.”

The History of Arlington School in Bureau County

Arlington (population 211) is located in north-central Illinois in the northeast portion of Bureau County. Illinois Route 89 is the main roadway leading to and from Arlington. The county roadways of 3200 E. and 3150 N will also take you into Arlington. The Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad passes through Arlington as well and was instrumental in the early growth and establishment of the village. Arlington is located about 9 miles northwest of Peru.

The history of the village of Arlington can be viewed on the web addresses of  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlington,_Illinois and  http://genealogytrails.com/ill/bureau/Township/WestfieldTwp.html#Village .

A summary of information from both articles is as follows:

Arlington was established in Westfield Township in Bureau County in the early 1840s. The town was platted along the Burlington Railroad line in 1853.  Arlington was incorporated as a village in 1874.  The town was known as Long Grove at one point. It is named Arlington after a city in New York of the same name. In the very early 1900s the population of the town was around 400 residents.  The town had great promise with several stores in operation.

Two disasters seemed to have led to the stifling of the Arlington’s growth.  The Cherry Mine Disaster in 1909 led to the closing of that mine and is said to have caused several residents to leave to find work elsewhere.  In the 1950s a tornado ripped through Arlington causing great destruction of many businesses and homes.  Many of those effected chose not to rebuild and simply left the village.

Arlington School Inscription
“District No. 88 – 1921”

The history of the Arlington school was printed in a newspaper article in the Bureau County Republican dated July 9, 2012. It is reprinted below:

Only memories remain …

By Barb Kromphardt – bkromphardt@bcrnews.com

Arlington Village President Dick Koch watches closely as the former Arlington school is demolished Monday morning. The floors had rotted in the old building, and the double-bricked exterior walls were not insulated, making the building expensive to heat. A playground and shelter will be constructed on the site. ARLINGTON — The former Arlington School building will become the latest Bureau County school building to sink back into the dust as it is demolished this week.

Workers from Boehm Brothers of Peru began the two-week project late last week, and most of the main building came down Monday.

“I feel relieved,” said Village President Dick Koch, who watched from the sidelines.

Koch said it has been a challenge to keep the windows boarded up and trespassers out since the village bought the school from the LaMoille School District for $1 in 2003.

Koch said there had been no heat in the building for years, and the inside was dangerous with its rotten and sagging floors.

Also paying close attention to the demolition is Lynne Bonnell, who along with her father, Laurence (Nuco) Fonderoli and her three children all attended the school.

Bonnell said she was saddened with the school being demolished, and her family had many fond memories of the school. She said her father started school there in 1934 at a time when there were nuns as teachers, and her children attended Arlington Grade School while it was consolidated with the LaMoille School District. Bonnell, herself, attended from 1954-1962 before graduating with her class of 13 students.

“Blanche Mahar was my first- and second-grade teacher; Arlene Stielow taught third and fourth grade; Lester Lindenmier taught fifth and sixth grade; and Nellie Hubbard taught seventh and eighth grade and was the school principal,” she said. “I especially enjoyed the first- and second-grade room as it had a small stage where we had school plays.”

Bonnell said the school’s time had come.

“Though I am saddened by it being demolished, it is only a shell of it being a school with happy, laughing children in attendance for 79 years,” she said. “I am glad it will be replaced by a shelter and a new playground.”

On Monday, Koch said a 40-foot-by-40-foot playground will be constructed on the site, thanks to $15,000 from KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization, and $9,000 raised by the village in a number of fundraisers. Construction is set for Aug. 11, and Koch said 35 to 40 volunteers should be involved.

In addition to the playground and shelter, Koch said trees will be planted around the area for all of Arlington’s mayors. There will also be a memorial constructed out of salvaged bricks from the school for all the teachers who taught there.

Koch said all of the work on the site, from the asbestos abatement and demolition to the final landscaping and seeding will be paid for with a $75,000 infrastructure grant the village received from the state. Koch said the village has received one-fourth of the money and will get the rest when the work is completed.

The history of Arlington School

On April 11, 1867, the Arlington School Board purchased the entire Block 16 in Gilson’s Addition in the southeast section of the town for $610. A new frame building was built on the property at a cost of $14,800. Attendance ranged from 125 to 150 pupils due to the population expansion of the village to approximately 600 people.

In 1903, the school board, in consultation with Fr. John W. Cummings, pastor of St. Patrick Church, obtained the services of the Sisters of St. Benedict, Nauvoo, Ill., as teachers. When school opened for the fall term, Sisters Aloysius, Lucille, Veronica and Raphaella arrived to staff the Arlington Public School’s four classrooms. From 1922 through 1925, a three-year high school program was offered in the school.

In August 1920, the frame school building was burned to the ground. It was replaced by a modern, 14,604-square-foot, two-story building of brick construction. While the new school was under construction, Spaulding and community halls were used as classrooms. In January 1922, the new building was ready for occupancy.

By the 1935-36 school year, regular instruction in religion had begun. The instruction was held every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The Rev. Merle Robeson took charge of the Protestant children and Fr. W. J. Scollin took charge of the Catholic children. The classroom teachers were Sisters Imelda, Loyola, Louise and Scholastica. The Sisters of St. Benedict continued to serve the community until 1954.

In 1959, the school was remodeled. A gymnasium with locker rooms and a kitchen were added in 1963. In the spring of 1971, Arlington Grade School District No. 88 consolidated with the LaMoille and Van Orin school districts to form LaMoille Community Unit District No. 303. The Arlington school was used as a lower elementary grade school until April 6, 2001, when the building was closed. On May 19, 2003, the LaMoille Community Unit School District voted to sell the Arlington School building and adjoining property to the village of Arlington for $1.

Argenta High School “Hawks” (through 1945) “Bombers” (through 1966)

Argenta-Oreana High School
Former Argenta High School Building?

The History of Argenta High School

Argenta (population 921) is located in east-central Illinois in the northwestern portion of Macon County.  Argenta sits about six miles northeast of Decatur. Illinois Route 48 is the main roadway leading to and from Argenta. Interstate Highway 72 runs to the southeast of town. The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad runs alongside Route 48 while the Kickapoo Creek flows around the northside of Argenta.

The history of the town of Argenta and its school system are in need of research;.  It is probable that a school system was in place for Argenta students by the late 1800s.  A high school was certainly in place by the early 1900s.  Argenta High School served the town and surrounding rural kids for over six decades.  Consolidation talks arose in the mid-1960s between the school districts of Argenta and the nearby town of Oreana.  This effort led to the creation of the Argenta-Oreana School District in 1966.

The high school for the new district is still located today in Argenta.  It was for many years held in the original Argenta High School building which is pictured above, with a few building additions.  Recently the Argenta-Oreana School District completed a new building for $15 million that will serve the two towns and surrounding area for many years to come.

Athletics

Argenta High School offered boys basketball (www.ihsa.org) and probably baseball, track, and football as well.  Team nickname, team colors, team records, coach’s names, and school fight song are all items we are seeking to help better document the Argenta HS athletic program.

Boys Basketball

Argenta High School was a cause for great excitement on many a winter night.  The boys basketball team had some great seasons in the 1950s and early 1960s.  A total of SEVEN District titles and one Regional title showed the Argenta HS strengths of the era.  The year of 1950-51 saw Argenta’s deepest run into the State Tourney making it all the way to Sectional Tournament action.  Coach’s names and team records of these and other great Argenta teams are not currently available. Scores involving Argenta HS in the IHSA State Tournament were located on a website titled “Illinois High School Postseason Basketball Scores” and are listed below.

Argenta-Oreana Coach Clay Haurberg provided the following research and excellent information regarding the Argenta High School basketball program:

“Origins:

1914-15 was the first year that Argenta had a basketball team (see attached clipping from 9/16/1914)..

Argenta Organizes Basketball Team 09/16/2014

Regarding the school mascot:

The Argenta HS teams were known as the “Hawks” until the end of the 1944-45 school year, when they changed their mascot to the “Bombers”, an homage to US Army Air Force from WWII. (See attached photo of a Argenta Hawks jacket)

Some unusual history:

The attached article from 12/23/1925 says that Argenta played all its games outdoors that season until the weather became too cold, then spent the rest of the year playing on the road; however, I have found older clippings about games played in Argenta during the winter months. Perhaps there were times that they were able to rent a space in town in which to play their games?”

It seems that Argenta HS had no gym for practice or games in their early years. They handled this by holding practices and games outdoors, starting as early as September, until a new high school was built in 1928 with it’s own gym (see attached clipping from 10/24/1928).

Eureka won 5 conference titles in his 20 years as head coach. He is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches, Illinois State University, Greater Peoria, and Argenta-Oreana High School Sports Halls of Fame.

MEMORIES

**From Michael Sullivan regarding Coach Don Sullivan (1948-49 through 1953-54):

“I was researching my father, Don Sullivan, basketball coaching career and found an Argenta High School page in need of information.  My father coached at Argenta beginning 1948-1949 through the 1953-1954 seasons.  After that he coached the 1954-1955 Peoria Spalding team to the Elite Eight 22-6.  His next position was a year at Farmer City 1955-1956 before moving on to coach at LaSalle-Peru.  This finished his high school coaching as he coached an AAU team “Ottawa Falstaff” and then a stint at LPO Junior College before becoming the first basketball coach at the College of DuPage.

Both my father and his brother Andy coached at the same time and were a successful part of IHSA basketball history.

I recently saw scrapbooks with newspaper articles and pictures from some of his time at Argenta, Peoria Spalding, and Farmer City.  Dad has a large frame sketch of old Peoria Spalding  in his living room given to him be a team member at a class reunion and has been a lifetime friend of a player he coached on the 1950-51 Argenta team that was beaten by Decatur in the Sectional Final.”

**From Jim:

“I was in the Argenta – Oreana school district from 1961- 1973 . We were known as the Bombers the entire time. That has been their nickname for a long time. Before WWII probably was different.”

The History of Arenzville High School

Arenzville (population 419) is located in western Illinois about 12 miles northwest of Jacksonville.  The town was platted in 1839 by its founder, Francis Arenz.  Arenzville sits quietly on Arenzville Road at Virginia Road in the southwestern area of Cass County. The At & St Railroad travels through town.  A branch of the Indian Creek flows through Arenzville as well.  The village was organized as an official town in 1853.  Some EXCELLENT reading regarding Arenzville and its storied history can be found at the following web address:  http://www.burgoo.org/schools/schools.html. Great work by site creator Molly Daniel!!

The school system was initiated shortly after the towns’ establishment.  A nice history of the school system in Arenzville is available at the web address of http://www.burgoo.org/people/zusckha.html . The grounds on which the Arenzville schools have stood was originally donated to the town for this purpose by a man named John Zuschka who passed away in 1843.

The first substantial brick school building was constructed on this property and opened for classes in 1892. It was referred to as the “Zuschka School.” This school operated as a 1 – 8 grade school with a 2-year high school. Unfortunately this building was burnt to the ground in a fire in 1908.

Arenzville Zuschka School Building 1892-1908
http://www.burgoo.org/people/zusckha.html

The townspeople of Arenzville did not hesitate after the fire demolished the first building. Construction on a new building was begun almost immediately. The new building opened for class in 1909. This building served the town well for six decades, holding high school classes from 1909-1959 and continuing to hold grade school classes from 1959 – 1969.

It was in the late 1950s that consolidation talks arose between the school districts of Arenzville and the nearby towns of Concord and Chapin.  The effort became a reality after the 1959 school year with the creation of the Triopia School District.

Athletics

Arenzville High School’s Raiders competed in boys basketball for sure.  As with most of the smaller schools on this site we believe that AHS offered baseball and track as well.  School team colors, fight song, team records, and coach’s names are all being sought at this time.

One interesting piece of Arenzeville HS trivia is that:

After the 1959 consolidation of Arenzeville with the districts in Concord and Chapin to form Concord Triopia,  the sports teams competed under the Triopia banner that first year.  However the students attended school in their old buildings until the new Triopia building was ready in 1960.  Coach Don Kemp became the head football coach at Triopia and went on to a long and distinguished career coaching football at that school.  He got his start at Arenzeville.

Boys Basketball

Boys basketball at Arenzville High School is the only sport covered on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org).  The Raiders had some real nice seasons including four District Championships and one UNDEFEATED regular season!! A great article on the first two District Championship seasons can be viewed at http://www.burgoo.org/stories/basketball.html.

The best of the Raider seasons as listed on the IHSA website are in turn listed below.  As you can see, Coach Don Kemp did a real nice job guiding the program through its later years. Scores invoving Arenzville High School boys basketball teams playing in the IHSA state tournament are located on a website title “Illinois Postseason High School Basketball Scores.”

The History of Apple River High School

Apple River (population 379) is located in the northeast corner of Jo Davies County in the far northwestern portion of Illinois.  Apple River sits just a quarter mile south of the Wisconsin border.  Stage Coach Trail is the main roadway leading you to and from Apple River.  The Chicago, Central, & Pacific Railroad travels through town and was instrumental in its early growth.  As a point of reference Apple River sits about 20 miles northeast of Galena.

According to the web address of (click here)  the following is a brief history of Apple River and its former high school:

Apple River was first settled in the early 1830s.  By the 1840s enough families had moved into the area that a school was established.  It was in 1854 when the railroad line, now known as the Chicago, Central, & Pacific, was laid through the area.  The town was so named after a river of the same name which traveled through the area and was the villages’ water supply in the early days.

As railroad workers moved the tracks westward, the town of Apple River began to flourish.  In 1868 Apple River was incorporated as a village after a very close vote by the men of the town.

Apple River residents built a school for their children in 1857.  The town’s population was growing quickly and it became a necessity that a new school be built to accomodate the influx of new students.  In 1873 a new school building was built to house a high school in town.

A web site showing the graduating class of Apple River High School in 1938 was supplied to us by our good fan, Roberta VanBriesen. You can take a look at it by clicking on the following web address:

http://www.genealogytrails.com/ill/jodaviess/schoolapplehs.html

We are continuing to look for information on Apple River High School.  We only know that at some point, the school district consolidated with its neighbor to the east, Warren.  Warren High School continues to prosper today.

Apple River maintained a grade school as part of the Warren School District. However this era is coming to an end as well.  According to the web address of

http://www.journalstandard.com/news/education/x231950046/District-to-close-Apple-River-school the Apple River Grade School will close at the end of this school year (2009-10).

ATHLETICS

The Apple River High School athletic program likely included the sports of basketball, baseball, and track.  It is possible that at one time or another football or other sports were offered as well.  We are searching for team records, coaches names, and individual accomplishments.  Also welcome are the “quick facts” items we are missing above, including team nickname, uniform colors, and school fight song.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We suspect that Apple River High School offered several extra-curricular activities on top of sports.  School dances, clubs, band, and chorus were possibly offered to the APHS students as well.

The History of Annapolis High School

Annapolis (population approximately 150) is located in lower-eastern Illinois in the north-central portion of Crawford County.  County Road E2000th Avenue connects Annapolis to the nearest “major” roadway, Illinois Route 1, just 6 miles to the east of Annapolis.  County Road N1000th Street intersects with E2000th Avenue in the heart of Annapolis.  The town is situated in a true country setting and is about four blocks wide from east to west and two blocks long from north to south.  Annapolis sits about 10 miles northwest of Robinson and seven miles west of the Indiana/Illinois state line.

History of Annapolis and its former high school are in great need of research.  The fact that Annapolis once had a high school in town was brought to our attention by a fan of the Glory Days site, George Piersall.  This fact is verified by the caption of the photo George also submitted.  We are certain that Annapolis likely had a school in place by the late 1800s, high school curriculum by the early 1900s. The Annapolis High School building pictured above was built in 1927  Our guess is that Annapolis High School may have not been a full four-year school.  We need research completed in this area.  As you can tell by the photo, Annapolis High School was going strong in 1937.  Annapolis High School probably closed in the 1940s. The children of Annapolis now attend school in nearby Hutsonville.

We are in need of a lot of assistance in gaining information on Annapolis High School and the history of the town itself.  Please contact us at ihsgdwebsite@comcast.net if you have any information you wish to share.

Athletics

The Annapolis High School boys likely competed in the sport of basketball against other similar-sized schools in the area. Baseball and track may also have been offered to the boys. We are searching for team uniform colors, fight song, coaches names, and season records.

Extra-Curriculars

Our guess is that band and chorus, along with FFA and other activities, may have been offered at Annapolis High School as well.

Union Academy High School (Anna)

The History of Union Academy High School in Anna

The city of Anna (population 5,136) is located in far southern Illinois in the center of Union County. The mighty Mississippi River is located 10 miles to the west of Anna and the busy college town of Carbondale sits 20 miles to the north.  Roads leading to Anna include U.S. Route 51 which intersects with Il. Routes 146 and 127.  The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad runs some tracks through town as well.  Creeks and rivers in the area include the Cache River, the Little Creek, and Lick Creek.

The history of Union Academy High School in Anna can be found at the web address of  www.ajchs.union.k12.il.us/history.HTM .  In summary the article states the following:

Union Academy High School was the dream of Walter Willard and William Faris of Anna.  The men saw the future of Anna needing a school of higher learning for the children of the area. The idea took 12 years to develop, however Union Academy High School opened its doors in 1883. Union Academy grew to be an ever popular school.  People in the area were constantly looking for ways to expand the facilities and quality of education. By 1907 the school was known throughout the area, having its campus built on the outskirts of Anna.

By 1917 the towns of Anna and Jonesboro had established their own public high schools.  The three school districts decided to pool their efforts into one school district.  This effort took place with the consolidation of AnnaJonesboro, and Union Academy high schools.  The high school for the new district was located on the Union Academy High School campus.

Anna-Jonesboro School District is still thriving today.  The fate of the original Union Academy school buildings is being sought.

Athletics and Extra-Curriculars

We are fairly certain that the boys of Union Academy High participated in interscholastic athletics.  It is probable that the boys played basketball, baseball, and track.  The coach’s names and team records are needed.  Also needed are the team colors, fight song, and team nickname.

Other activities such as proms, dances, class plays, farmer’s institutes, and various clubs may have been a part of the Union Academy High School experience as well.  We are hopeful an area fan or alumni can help us with this information.

Do YOU Have Any Further Information?

According to the Anna-Jonesboro School District web site (www.ajchs.union.k12.il.us/history.HTM) Anna traces its educational roots back to 1883 when the need for a school in town was recognized.  Anna provided that education for its children until 1918 when its neighbor (and I mean neighbor!) to the southwest, Jonesboro High School, and a county school in the middle, Union High School, took up talks of consolidation.  The High School was located at the Union High School facility and named the Anna-Jonesboro Commmunity High School District.  This is probably one of the earliiest consolidation efforts in the state of Illinois.  Anna-Jonesboro High School is still going very strong today.

There are two elementary schools in Anna, however it is not known if either is located in the original Anna High School building. We are hopeful an Anna resident can help us with this information.

Anna definately offered track and probably offered basketball and baseball.  More information is needed on the success of the basketball and baseball programs at Anna High School.  The great track exploits and incredible accomplishments of one Anna trackster is listed below.

What can you say about the Anna track teams of 1903 and 1904?  How about Dick Seay!! This name would be about all you would need.   Dick Seay single handedly led Anna to a 2nd place finish in the 1904 state track meet.  Dick Seay teamed with a fellow named Dillon in 1903 to lead Anna to a 4th place finish!  The two great seasons in early Anna High School history are listed below, as researched through the IHSA web site (www.ihsa.org).

The History of Andover High School

Andover is located on Il. Rt. 81 approximately 25 miles southwest of the Quad Cities in Henry County. The town’s population is a comfortable 600 residents.  Perhaps best known outside of the village, making the town even world reknowned, is the “Jenny Lind Chapel.”   The “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind visited the town in the mid 1800’s.  She was a world famous singer of the time, and she donated a sizable sum of money for the Chapel’s construction. The chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Occasional Swedish services are held there, as well as other occasional ceremonials.

Education has been important in the town from its foundation.  The children of Andover now attend high school in nearby Orion. The high school closed in 1945, and by 1949 the village was officially joined to the Orion School District.  Rural students directly east of the village attend Cambridge schools, and to the south, Alwood.  The grade school closed in the 1974.

A new brick high school building was erected in Andover in 1927. It served as Andover Consolidated School District #26 from 1927 through 1945. It continued to serve as a grade school for the Orion School District until classes were discontinued there in 1974. Today the building is in pretty good shape and serves as an apartment building.

A photo viewed in a Mineral High School yearbook shows the Andover High School basketball team and lists them as the Andover “Swedes”.  (If the photo is located it will be scanned onto this page.)  Grade School Students, located in the same building, had their own team name, the “Blue Racers.”  Andover High School colors were blue and gold.  The colors of the Swedish flag are blue and gold.  These school colors are currently used at nearby Galva High School (officially at Galva blue and “maize”), also a town with a large precentage of Swedish Immigrants.

More information regatrding the history and educational past of Andover was located by our own Richard Soseman:

“There was a Lutheran Farm/School at Andover for many years.  Many of the

residents were from Sweden.”

“Also, an Andover points of interest website refers to the “Site of

Andover’s first two-story school”. Built in 1858, Andover’s first school was

located just south of the colony, and was erected in the late 1830’s.

According to their website, Andover was “patterned after New Haven,

Connecticut, as the founder envisioned a seat of learning, religion, and

commerce.”  Andover was the first town founded in Henry County.”

The “Historic Inn” is one building that remains of the 1800’s high school complex, as the second floor housed some classrooms, and a stage used for High School and community productions, as well as Vaudeville.  The stage curtain still contains, on the back, signatures of students and other actors who took part in productions there.  The fine arts were important at the High School, with plays and music being performed frequently.

Another building used for high school classes in the early 1900’s is the American Woman’s League Chapter House, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Scandinavian Immigrants were known for their love of music, and so it is perhaps not surprising that Andover High School had an original school song of several verses, with words written by Coach Ralph Zech, and original music composed by Orlan P. Anderson.  Also unusual for public schools which shared the same building is the fact that the Grade School had its own separate mascot and school song.

Athletics

We were unable to find any championships in IHSA sports that were brought home by the Andover HS teams. It is known they competed in basketball.   The team nickname was the “Mighty Swedes.”  The boys had some very good basketball success.

The great seasons of Andover High School’s past should not be forgotten.  The Mighty Swedes may have been one of the smaller schools of their time in the area, however they were known for their “size of the fight in the dog” attitudes.

The Andover “Terrible Swedes” Semi-Pro Baseball Team

Anyone with some knowledge of Baseball from its inception until the Depression is well aware of the profusion of baseball teams throughout the USA during that time.  From the big cities to the small towns baseball was the chief pasttime, and most counties had several amateur and professional baseball teams.  Some of these teams survive today as members of the major leagues, or of regional leagues, such as the Midwest League.  Modern leagues do experience some fluctuation in teams and schedules from year to year, but  in the early years this was a common occurence.  What are today nationally or regionally known teams were, in the early years, one team among others, and would often play teams form the next town or county.  Most counties had at least one or two teams of note.

Athletes who were skilled in baseball would join local teams, or travel from town to town, staging exhibitions and hoping to land a spot on a larger team with more prospects.  Players would play for the glory of meeting a worthy opponent on the field of competition, to show their own prowess, and/or to make a buck.  Many young men had to be satisfied with the glory of the sport, and eked out a living as they could.  The distinction between pro and amateur was blurred during this time.

The Andover Terrible Swedes fit into this context.  They were known as a strong ball club for many decades, and their renown extended beyond Henry County, as they played teams from Galesburg, Moline, Davenport, Chicago, and beyond.  Some of their opponents would certainly be well known today as teams of today’s minor leagues.  The Terrible Swedes certainly would have played a minor league team from Kewanee, which existed for a few years around 1910.  Their name would be resurrected in 1930 for the Kewanne High School football team:  The Boilermakers.  As Andover became a launching point of Swedish migration to Kansas and other points west, the name of the Andover Terrible Swedes also spread far and wide.  Eventually, the name Terrible Swedes would be adopted by Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, which was founded by immigrants who had lived at Andover.

Andover resident Ron Peterson relates:

Andover is the home of the legendary “Terrible Swedes” baseball team, which played during the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s.  In 1929 they won the Henry County title with a team batting average of well over .300; and in 1936 they were Illinois State Champions.  One of the team members was Franklin Johnson, who went on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Players for the “terrible Swedes” would have been graduates of Andover High School, or boys who had finished eighth grade, immigrants who came to live and work in the town and who had learned the game of Baseball.  The team was supported by civic leaders, as a sign of civic pride, and to bring fame to their hometown.  It is likely that the players were given the freedom by their employers to practice and to play frequently.  It is certain that through the years they racked up many victories.

Those pictured in this 1920 photo all have Swedish last names, they include Top Row, left to right: Francis Anderson,  Franklin Johnson, Bill Johnson,  Nate Hultgren, Dick Peterson, and Ralph Bengston.  In the front row are pictured:  Martin “Loppy” Anderson,  Willis Bengston, Bert Johnson,  Amos Anderson, and Rueben Hultgren.
