The History of Freeport Aquin Catholic High School

Freeport (population 26,443) is located in northwestern Illinois in Stephenson County, roughly 20 miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border, and 25 miles west of Rockford. US Route 20, along with Illinois 26 & 75 connect the city with the rest of the region, as does a line operated by the Canadian National Railroad.

The history of the community is tied to both Indian and immigrant history, originally being called Winneshiek, before changing its name to Freeport due to a free ferry that was operated by Tutty Baker across the Winnebago River.

Baker was one of the first immigrants from Germany via the state of Pennsylvania that settled in this northern Illinois town, starting in 1827. When Stephenson County was formed in 1837, Winneshiek became Freeport on 1838 due to the generosity of Baker, who had also set up a trading post on the river. Freeport grew quickly as it could be reached by stagecoach in those days from Chicago & had erected a courthouse and school within a few years.

Freeport was also a significant stop during the Lincoln-Douglas Debates in 1858, holding the second of the seven debates between the two senatorial candidates which would set the stage for the 1860 Presidential campaign that Lincoln would win.

The community is the birthplace of columnist Louella Parsons, basketball star Deacon Davis of Harlem Globetrotter fame, Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder Robert Johnson, football player Preston Pearson, and television actress Calista Flockhart.

AQUIN HIGH SCHOOL

Aquin High School was opened on September 07, 1923 on the second floor of the Freeport St. Mary parish elementary school. The original name for the high school was Freeport Catholic Community High School with an enrollment of 35 students. This name was changed to Aquin High School prior to the start of the 1924 school year. Due to the early success and increase in enrollment the high school expanded to include the 3rd floor of the elementary school building.

Ground was broken for a new high school building for the Aquin students in 1926. Catholic Bishop Peter J. Muldoon was on hand to lay the cornerstone of the new building. The mascot of “Bulldogs” was chosen by the student body of the 1942-43 school year. In 1959 Aquin High School became known as Aquin Central Catholic High School. In 1959 funding was set for a new addition to the high school building which included a library, cafeteria, gym, laboratories, and additional classrooms. This addition was ready for usage in 1961. In 1976 junior high school students began attending at the Aquin High School building. In 2007 the 3 catholic schools in Freeport were combined and known as Aquin Catholic Schools. In 2021 the Freeport Aquin High School building became an all-inclusive K – 12 educational facility.

Freeport Aquin High School enjoyed 100 years of remarkable academic and athletic successes. Unfortunately enrollment began to fall and financial strife began to take its toll. It was decided in the spring of 2024 that Aquin High School would be closed. The Aquin school building continues to serve as an educational facility as of 2024-2025. The school serves as a “micro catholic academy” for grades K – 8.

ATHLETICS

Both the boys and girls basketball teams had some great success in athletics over the years. The Bulldogs earned THREE IHSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in football. The Lady Bulldogs won TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in basketball and ONE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in volleyball. Many, MANY Regionals, Sectionals, and individual medals were also earned throughout the existence of Freeport Aquin High School.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

As stated previously, the Aquin Lady Bulldogs won back-to-back IHSA Class 1A State Championships (2011-12 and 2012-13). In addition the girls program won 14 Regional Titles, 3 Sectional Titles, 3 Super Sectional Titles, and made the Elite 8 Round in the IHSA Class ‘A’ Tournament in 1999-2000.
