The History of Rushville High School

Rushville (population 3,212) is located in western Illinois about 20 miles south of Macomb and 45 miles northwest of Springfield.  U.S. Route 24 intersects with U.S. Route 67 on the west side of Rushville. The A,T, & SF Railroad has a line that reaches into Rushville.  The Town Branch of the LaMoine River flows into the south side of town while the Crane Creek flows to the northeast side of town.  Rushville is the county seat of Schuyler County and is located in its north-central area.  Rushville was platted in 1818 and settlement there came soon after. Rushville was officially incorporated as a town in 1831.

According to the website address of http://www.rushville.org/ , Rushville’s history in short is the following:

“The Schuyler County Seat is the town of Rushville, which was incorporated in 1826. Rushville derives its name from a famous Philadelphian surgeon named Dr. Benjamin Rush. Its history tells a story of growth and prosperity. From a tiny wilderness village of 12 families in 1825, Rushville has grown to a prosperous town of more than 3,300 citizens.”

Rushville has one of the longest histories of school systems recorded on this site.  The webpage of http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl/OldTimesInSchuyler/OTISfirstschool.html states that the first school in Rushville was established in the 1830s.  A high school was established and in place by 1848. This being said we know that Rushville High School has served the town and surrounding area proudly for at least 152 years.

Rushville High School entered into consolidation talks with its neighbor to the north, Industry, in the early 2000s. It was settled in 2005 that the school districts of Rushville and Industry would would consolidate to form the Rushville-Industry School District.  Rushville residents have continue to host the high school in their town.
