The History of Meredosia High School

Meredosia (population 1,041) is located in western Illinois in the northwest corner of Morgan County. The town was first settled in 1816 and platted in 1832.  Its prime location on the banks of the Illinois River led to its rapid early growth. At one time there were four “fisheries” in town. Illinois Route 104 is the main roadway to and from Meredosia and connects it to U.S. Route 67 just two miles to the east.  A branch of the Norfolk & Western Railroad travels to the southside of Meredosia.  The Meredosia Lake sits quietly to the north of town. A short and interesting article on the town’s history can be read at:

The history of the school system in town is in need of research.  We believe primary education probably started as early as the mid-1850s.  A high school was likely in place by the late 1800s.  Meredosia High School served the community on a solo basis through the early 1950s.  It was then that consolidation talks were initiated with its neighbor to the west, Chambersburg (also on this site).  This effort was realized in 1955 when the Meredosia-Chambersburg School District was formed.  The high school for the district was located in Meredosia.

It is quite possible that the original Meredosia High School building is still utilized as the Meredosia-Chambersburg High School building today.  We are in need of this information from a local fan.

Meredosia definitely offered boys basketball (www.ihsa.org), and 6-man football.  We are fairly certain that baseball and track were also offered.  School team nickname, team colors, school fight song, team records, and coach’s names are all items we are searching for. Meredosia was a member of the Western Illinois Valley Conference from 1997-2003.

Boys Basketball

The Meredosia boys won two District titles during their existence. Unfotunately this is the extent of knowledge that we currently have regarding the program at MHS.  Team records and coach’s names of the better teams in Meredosia High School history are being sought.
