The History of Mahomet High School
Mahomet (population 4,877) is located in eastern Illinois about 10 miles northwest of Champaign. Mahomet was established in 1832 in western Champaign County. It was originally named Middletown because it was halfway between Bloomington and Danville. There was already a Middletown in Illinois (also on this website) however and in 1871 the town’s name was changed to Mahomet. The Sangamon River is a main waterway in Illinois and helped to draw people to Mahomet to settle in the early years. Railroad tracks were built all over Illinois in the mid to late 1800s and tracks made their way through Mahomet. Today it is Conrail Railroad who owns the tracks. Illinois Route 47 runs north and south through town and U.S. Route 150 runs to the east and west through Mahomet. Further growth has occurred since Interstate Highway 74 was built just north of town. Mahomet has seen great growth in the past 50 years. It is believed, but in need of research, that Mahomet began a high school program for their school-aged kids in the mid to late 1800s. It is known that Mahomet supported its own high school for over five decades. In the late 1940s consolidation talks between Mahomet and Seymour took place. In 1950 the two school districts merged to create the Mahomet-Seymour School District. Sandy (Davis) Roberts tells us the original Mahomet High School building was used as Mahomet-Seymour High School until 1961, when a new building was erected. When Mahomet-Seymour School District was formed, the high school was established in Mahomet. The original Mahomet High School continued in use as the Mahomet-Seymour Grade School for several years until this use was discontinued. If you know the fate of the original Mahomet High School building, and/or can provide a photo, please e-mail us at eganann@sbcglobal.net.
