The History of Channahon High School

Channahon (population 13,500 and growing) is located in northeastern Illinois in the western portion of Will County.  U.S. Route 6 is the main roadway to and from Channahon, though Interstate Highway 55 passes by the east side of town less than a mile away.  The Des Plaines River flows all around Channahon. The town sits about 10 miles southwest of Joliet. History regarding the town can be found both on the Wikipedia web address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channahon,_Illinois and the Channahon city web address of http://www.channahon.org/ .

In summary, the articles advise that Channahon was established in the early 1800s.  The town was first incorporated in 1896 but was “disincorporated” in 1911.  It was not until 1962 that the town became incorporated again.  The town of Channahon has experienced an incredible population boom as of late.  In the year 2000 the official census listed Channahon as having 7,344 residents.  A census taken in 2007 lists the population at 13,500.

A school was established shortly after the town was platted.  We are told by Bill Burmaster that Channahon residents established a high school as early as 1869. In fact, Channohon residents began a school system for their children in 1837. A new, more modern building was erected in 1869. This building offered both grade school and high school courses of study. The 1869 high school building burned down in 1922.  A new building was built to take its place in 1923.  It is believed that from the early 1920s through 1947 Channohon High School only offered 2-years of high school courses. To graduate from high school with a 4-year degree students had to attend other nearby high schools. In 1947 Channahon High School was forced to close by a state of Illinois mandate forcing all 2 and 3-year high schools to close.  High school-aged kids of Channahon were bussed to nearby Minooka to earn their high school diplomas.  This arrangement continues today. The 1922 Channahon school building is still in use today.

Minooka has also experienced an incredible population explosion.  It is being considered to add a new high school to the Minooka district within the city limits of Channahon.  As of this writing (2008) this has not yet occurred.  The former Channahon High School building now serves as the Pioneer Path Grade School for the Minooka School District.
