The History of Adair Community High School

Adair (population approximately 250) is located in upper-western Illinois in the southeast quarter of McDonough County.  The town sits about 10 miles east-southeast of Macomb. Illinois Route 136 is the main roadway to and from Adair. County Highway 3 also travels through town.  The Burlington Northern Railroad makes its way through Adair as well.

The history of the town and its former school system is in need of research.  Adair likely provided educational opportunities for its children by the late 1800s.  Adair Community High School District #384 was orgnized in 1919 and a beautiful brick school house was built close to the grade school in 1920.  Adair High School served the children of the town through the late 1940s.  The year was 1952 when Adair Community High School was closed..  The kids of Adair became part of the Macomb school district upon the closing of the high school.

We are told that the class of 1940 was ACHS’ biggest, with 22 graduates!

Athletics and Other Acitivites

We know that Adair High School competed in boys basketball and track.  It is quite possible that baseball was a part of the athletic program as well.  Currently we do not have any team records or coach’s names to share with you on this page.

We also believe that Adair formed an athletic co-op with its neighbor Industry in the late 1940s and 1950s.  The co-op was called Southeastern.

Boys Track & Field

One male athlete from Adair High carried the banner for the folks of his hometown at the IHSA State Track Meet in 1925.  Clarence H. Carrison placed FIFTH in the 880 yard run in the 1925 IHSA State ‘B’ Track Meet!!

Girls Basketball

The ladies competed in basketball with other schools in the area, at least in the 1930s for certain. An article in the Macomb Daily Journal, written February 1, 1933, was located by Beau Spencer. It states the following:

“The Brooklyn girls quintet, one of the strongest girls basketball teams in this section, is to meet the Adair girls team in a basketball program at the Industry High School gym tomorrow night.  The Brooklyn team has lost only one game in three seasons.  The Adair team has not lost a game in two years, though the McDonough team has not played as strong opponents as Brooklyn.”

Extra-Curricular Activities

We are also certain that, like many small schools, the folks of Adair valued a good, well-rounded education for their children..We are confident that band, chorus, and several club activites were offered to the children who attended Adair High.  If you have any of this information to share with us, please follow the directions below.
