The History of Ford Central High School

Piper City (population 781) is located in upper-eastern Illinois about 25 miles east-southeast of Pontiac. The town was platted in the north-central “panhandle” region of Ford County. U.S. Route 24 intersects with Illinois Route 115 on the “outskirts” of the south and west sides of Piper City, giving a lot of road travel to and from the town. According to Map Quest (www.mapquest.com), the Toledo, Peoria, & Western Railroad is the owner of the railroad tracks that divide Piper City.  A branch of the North Fork of the Vermillion River flows both to the west and to the east of Piper City.

Roberts (population 387) is located on Il. Route 54 approximately 40 miles southwest of Kankakee. This places Roberts in northern Ford County. The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad runs through the center of the town.

Thawville (population 258) is located in far western Iroquois County on Il. Route 54. This places the town approximately 35 miles southwest of Kankakee. The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad runs through the center of the village

At one time all three towns featured their own high schools. In 1949 Roberts and Thawville combined their schools to create the Roberts-Thawville School District.  Dwindling enrollment was the cause for consolidation talks between Piper City High School and Roberts-Thawville High School.  This effort became a reality in 1974 with the creation of the Ford Central School District. The high school for the Ford Central School District was located in Piper City.

Ford Central High School had a lot of success in its short tenure.  Continued declining enrollment forced further consolidation talks for the residents of the three towns. It was decided in 1992 that the Ford Central School District would be deactivated.

Residents of the three towns decided to “go their own way”. The Piper City kids were annexed to the Tri-Point (Cullom) School District, the Roberts kids now attend school at PBL, and the Thawville kids go to Iroquois West (Gilman).

The former Ford Central High School building is now used as the Tri-Point Junior High School,

The Ford Central Cougars were an extremely competitive bunch.  The sports of boys and girls baskeball, boys and girls track, football, and volleyball all enjoyed a measure of success in the IHSA playoffs (www.ihsa.org). All of this in only 18 years of existence!

The history of the town and its former high school are in need of research. We do believe that Piper City began an educational system for its children in the late 1800’s. A high school was established by the very late-1800’s and certainly by the very early-1900’s. The brick high school building pictured above and to the right was built before 1907. Piper City High School served the town and its children for about eight decades. In the early 1970’s, consolidation talks arose between Piper City and Roberts-Thawville high schools. In 1974, this effort became a reality, resulting in the creation of the Ford Central School District. The high school for the Ford Central District was located in Piper City.

In 1992 the Ford Central School District was disolved by the state and the students from the Piper City were annexed into the Tri-Point School District (Cullom). The Piper City school building is now used as a grade school for the Tri-Point School District. The football field in Piper City is still used for the Tri-Point HS home games.

The Blue Streaks of Piper City athletic program definitely offered boys’ basketball, football, and track. We believe that baseball was also offered at one time or another.

Boys Basketball

The Piper City High School Blue Streaks had some real nice seasons in boys basketball. All of the team records and coach’s names from 1950 to 1974 are listed. Unfortunately, no IHSA tournament hardware was won. The kids of the school’s last three seasons of its solo run left the school with a good feeling, sporting winning records each year!

Football

One of the great football players to roam the gridiron at Piper City HS was Doug Harford. In 1962, Harford scored 222 of his team’s season points, and ended up scoring a total of 407 points in his two-year varsity career. His career total ranks in the top 20 in Illinois in that category.

Some of the better Piper City HS grid iron team records are listed below thanks to the research of Tom Sikorski.

1951  1-7  First team in school history –                   Coach Russ Moore

Music / Band

We are certain that the Piper City HS kids were quite well versed in band and chorus as well. The music department may have even won a state competition or two in Class D for band. The band picked up a “Governor’s trophy” at the Illinois State Fair one year also for their excellence under the direction of Mr. Paul Pizner.

A Graduate’s Memory

Donna Johnson Rummens speaks of her days at PCHS. “I graduated from PCHS in 1956 and was on the staff of the school newspaper – The Pied Piper. The Choral Music Department had its share of successes. When I was a senior, Elaine Pizner came to PCHS to head the Choral Music department. She was a new U of I(llinois) graduate, and her enthusiasm for vocal music influenced many of us. Elaine has been my sister-in-law for almost 49 years, and never lost her enthusiasm for music. I recently returned to PCHS for my 50th class reunion. In addition to seeing classmates for the first time in many years, I enjoyed visiting the library in Piper City, as well as the museum located upstairs over the library. There are many photos and other interesting bits of history in both places. I would encourage others interested in PCHS and PCCHS to visit those places.”

As Found on http://www.hcc.coop/~catholic/home.htm

The History of Piopolis Catholic High School

Piopolis (population 25?) is located in southeastern Illinois in the north central portion of Hamilton County. Piopolis is situated about seven miles north of McLeansboro. County Highway 20 is the main roadway to and from Piopolis. It connects to Illinois Route 242 which passes by about one mile to the east. County Road 800e also passes through Piopolis.

A nice history of the town of Piopolis is available on the Wikipedia web address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piopolis,_Illinois . It reads as follows:

“Piopolis was settled in 1841 by Roman Catholic immigrants from Baden, Germany. It was known as Auxier Prairie, Dutch Settlement, Mount St. John, St. Francis Xavier, and Belle Prairie before being named Piopolis in 1877 after Pope Pius IX. Piopolis once had a post office, which opened in 1848, and a public school which operated from the 1880s to the 1920s. The community’s economy has historically been based on farming.”

An excellent timeline for Piopolis and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church located there can be found at the web address of http://www.hcc.coop/~catholic/history/stjohnb.htm .Highlights from this timeline include the following:

In 1870 a school was begun at St. John the Baptist Church when a two story building was constructed. Nuns from Germany arrived via wagon to teach at the school, which remained open and  taught by nuns until 1964. In 1924 a new brick school building was erected on the church grounds. In 1929 a two-year high school course was offered. The high school classes were discontinued in 1933 due to low enrollment.

There are other references regarding the school building at St. John the Baptist.  There is also a mention of the Piopolis public school closing in 1974. We know that the school building for the Catholic School is still standing and apparently well maintained. It is probable that the kids who are from or near Piopolis today attend the Hamilton County School system in McLeansboro.

Athletics & Extra-Curricular Activities

It is not known at this time if athletics were offered at Piopolis Catholic High School.  It is possible that activities (including athletics) such as band, chorus, plays, and graduations may have been held at the school.

Sincere Gratitude

Thank you to our good friend and long-time fan of the IHSGD website, Roberta VanBriesen, who’s tireless efforts led to the discovery of the research for this page.

Philo St. Joseph High School

The History of Philo St. Joseph Academy High School

Philo (population 1,314) is located in east-central Illinois about 6 miles southeast of Champaign.  The town was platted in the south-central portion of Champaign County in 1864.  Illinois Route 130 is the main roadway leading to Philo and it intersects with County Highway 18 in town.  The Black Slough Creek flows to the south of Philo. The Norfolk & Western railroad travels through the north side of town..

According to a “rootsweb” website page the early history of Philo is as follows:

“The village of Philo, of considerable importance, stands on a beautiful location, situated on the Toledo, Wabash and Western railroad. It was laid out in 1864 by E. B. Hale, the son of Philo Hale, and includes 80 acres of land.”

Information on Philo High School can be viewed on this website by clicking here. We have found the following information on St. Joseph Academy ( a grade and high school) in Philo on the internet. According to the web address of http://www.cdop.org/catholic_post/post_9_11_05/news.cfm from the Catholic Archdiocese of Peoria:

“The first Catholic school in Philo opened in 1905 as St. Joseph’s Academy, an elementary and high school that served both the Philo and Bongard churches. The Dominican Sisters of Springfield gave 95 years of service to the school, from its founding until their withdrawal in 2000.

The original three-story building served as both a school and a convent for the Dominicans. A boarding school opened in 1907 for students from outlying areas who returned home on weekends. St. Joseph’s high school graduated its final class in 1938, and the following fall the elementary school reopened as St. Thomas.”

It appears that Philo St. Joseph Academy was a co-educational school, at least in the end.  The above two paragraphs contain the totality of the information we currently have available on the history of Philo St. Joseph Academy.  Please contact us if you have ANY further information to share.

Athletics

Two articles were brought to our attention that helped us track St. Joseph’s athletic program, though to a very limited extent.  On the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org) there is an article under the “Illinois H.S.toric” section regarding Catholic HIgh School basketball state tournaments in Illinois.  In the inaugural Illinois Catholic High School State Tournament held in 1928, Philo St. Joseph Academy finished  FOURTH (http://www.ihsa.org/initiatives/hstoric/basketball_cathtourn.htm)!

Another article was sent to us by our good friend Phil Shadid.  The article is from the Illinois State Register Newspaper of Springfield and is dated October 03, 1938.  This would have been St. Joweph Academy’s final season.  This article simply lists St. Josephs as one of the participating schools in football for the Illinois Catholic High School Conference for downstate teams.

So we know that St. Joseph Academy High School participated in boys basketball and football. Baseball and track may also have been offered. We are in need of the schools team colors, nickname, fight song, coach’s names, and season records.

Other Activities

Other activities were likely offered at St. Joseph as well.  Band, chorus, FFA, FHA, and many other clubs and organizations may have helped to make the Philo St. Joseph experience a well-rounded one.  Please contact us via hte means listed below if you have this information and would like to share it on this page.

The History of Philo High School

Philo (population 1,314) is located in east-central Illinois about 6 miles southeast of Champaign.  The town was platted in the south-central portion of Champaign County in 1864.  Illinois Route 130 is the main roadway leading to Philo and it intersects with County Highway 18 in town.  The Black Slough Creek flows to the south of Philo. The Norfolk & Western railroad travels through the north side of town. The town was named Philo after the first name of the person who platted the town, E.B. Hale.

According to a “rootsweb” website page the early history of Philo is as follows:

“The village of Philo, of considerable importance, stands on a beautiful location, situated on the Toledo, Wabash and Western railroad. It was laid out in 1864 by E. B. Hale, the son of Philo Hale, and includes 80 acres of land. Elam Ellithrop built the first house in the village, and Wright built the second, and he was also the first station agent for the Toledo, Wabash and Western railroad. B. C. Morris, M. D., was the first physician; he was the first to sell goods also; he built the first hotel. The town contains one school-house, two churches, two elevators, one mill, one dry goods store, three grocery stores, two drug stores, two hardware stores, two hotels, three blacksmith shops, one tin shop, two harness makers, lumber yard and livery stable.”

Another rootsweb page that offers the history of the Philo High School Class of 1908 can be viewed at:

http://champaign.illinoisgenweb.org/schools/philo1908.html .  A photo of the original Philo High School building was also located on the same rootweb website and can be viewed at http://champaign.illinoisgenweb.org/photoalbum/schools.html .

Philo High School served the community for over five decades.  The late 1940s brought with it many changes in the way schooling was supported in Illinois. The consolidation push of the smaller school districts came to Philo and the surrounding communities at that time.  After the 1949 school year the townspeople of Philo joined the efforts of several communitites in the area to form the Unity School District.  The high school for the new district was located in Tolono.

The fate of the original high school building in Philo was provided to us by David Happ:

“After Philo HS merged with Tolono and formed the Unity (Unit 7) school district, the building was used for elementary grades.  When Unity East was built, the Philo HS building, the Philo grade school, and the land were all sold to the Village of Philo.  This was around 2001.  The HS building that you have pictured on your site was then torn down, and the adjacent elementary school building was converted to Village offices.”

Some nice photos of school life at Philo High School can be viewed at the following web address created by G. Trimble:  http://personal.linkline.com/trimble/Philo/

The History of Petersburg High School

Petersburg (population 2,299) is located in near west-central Illinois about 15 miles northwest of Springfield.  Illinois Routes 97 and 123 intersect in the town of Petersburg.  The Chicago, Illinois Midland Railroad lays tracks through Petersburg.  The Sangamon River flows through town as well. According to the website address for Menard County, www.menardil.com, Petersburg was named by Peter Lukins in 1836.  Its location on the Sangamon River helped it grow quickly as it soon became, and remains today, the county seat of Menard County.

The history of the school system in Petersburg is found at a website with the following web link:  http://www.illinoisancestors.org/menard/school/petehist.html .

It is a very thorough and insightful history of the Petersburg High School district.   We know that Petersburg High School served the community on a solo basis for several decades.  It was in 1960s that the small towns in the Menard County area around Petersburg began talks of consolidation.  The effort between Petersburg, OakfordRock Creek, Tallula, and Atterberry became a reality in 1963.  The result was the formation of the P.O.R.T.A. School District. P.O.R.T.A. High School is located in Petersburg.

Gene Primm provided the following information regarding the original Petersburg High School building pictured above and the Petersburg 3rd Ward Grade School building pictured below:

“I attended the 3rd ward Grade School from 1945-1952 and graduated from Petersburg H.S. in 1957. The original section of the high school was finished in 1906.  There were other additions to this school which were completed in 1925, 1936(?), and 1953.”

From Steven Todd:

“Shortly after Porta High School building was constructed in late 70’s (1977 I believe), the former high school was purchased privately and converted first into a very popular health club and later into an apartment complex which it currently is. Many of us have fond memories watching some great early 1970’s basketball teams there including the one that went to state – greats such as the late Kevin

Washington (who still holds state tournament single game rebound record), Billy Gum, Casey Duncheon, and later Mike Atterberry to mention a few.”

School Fight Song:                    “Here’s To Petersburg”

Composed by Howard Akers (1938)

Here’s to Petersburg forever,

May we always be so true.

May our courage never falter,

May we always be loyal to you.

RAH! RAH!

May your memory live forever,

And stand for all that’s right,

So let’s Fight! Fight! Fight!

With all of our might,

For the honor of the Blue and White

Athletics

The Petersburg High School athletic program produced some excellent success on the fields and courts of the area.  Success was obtained in the sports of basketball, baseball, football, and track.  The academic department chipped in as well with great seasons in Speech and Drama (www.ihsa.org).  School team nickname, colors, and fight song are all items we are searching for.

Boys Baseball

The boys of the baseball diamond had at least one good year as far as the IHSA tournament is concerned, and probably many more that are not listed.  Team records and coach’s names of this and other great PHS teams are being sought.

Boys Track & Field

Peterrsburg High School enjoyed its greatest success in the sport of boys track & field.  An athlete by the name of Luther Sampson led the PHS thinclads to an incredible three consecutive TOP-TEN FINISHES in the IHSA State Track Meet!!  Luther Sampson brought home a total of 2 Gold Medals, three Silver Medals, and 3 Bronze Medals during three years of competition. The excellent run of the early 1900s by Luther Sampson and the PHS track program is listed below.  What makes Luther Sampson and Harry Apken’s individual accomplishments even more spectacular is the fact that it was during the time when Illinois had one-class only system!

The History of Pesotum High School

Pesotum (population 521) is located in east-central Illinois in south-central Champaign County.  Pesotum sits about 10 miles south of Champaign/Urbana. U.S. Route 45 is the main roadway leading you to and from Pesotum. Interstate Highway 57 runs just to the west of town and has exit ramps for Pesotum to U.S. Route 45.  The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad runs through town as well.  The Hackett Branch Creek flows just to the east of town.

The history of Pesotum and its former high school are in need of research. As you can see by the alumni program sent to us below, Pesotum High School was a reality.  We believe the high school may have been started in the late 1800s.  It served the children of Pesotum through the late 1940s. It was then that a consolidation effort of several towns in the area took place. This effort became a reality in 1949 with the creation of the Unity School District.  The high school for Unity is located near Tolono.

The fate of the Pesotum High School building is not known.  We fear it may have been torn down.  If you have this information please contact us via e-mailo at eganann@sbcglobal.net.

Athletics

Pesotum High School offered basketball, baseball, and track.  Unfortunately there is no mention of PHS athletics on the IHSA website (www.IHSA.org).  We are seeking the school fight song.  We are also seeking the better team records, coaches names, and great athletic stories of Pesotum High School’s past.

We do know from a 1938 Pesotum High School yearbook obtained by Nancy Hartman that the teams were commonly called the “Blue Boys”.  The boys themselves, however, referred to their nickname as the “Indians”.  The uniform colors were likely blue and white.

Information from the 1938 Yearbook

From Nancy Hartman:

“(This information was taken from the 1938 Blue’n White Echoes yearbook published by the Commercial Students of Pesotum High School, Pesotum, IL)

In 1938, E. G. Montgomery served as teacher (history), coach and principal at Pesotum High School.   Pictures are attached that appeared in the 1938 yearbook with corresponding picture captions listed below.

SPORTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

The yearbook notes that the boys Basketball Team call themselves the “Pesotum Indians,” because of the town’s name which originated from an Indian named Chief Pesotum, whose tribe was located near Chicago and would come to the area to hunt.  However, the 1938 yearbook also referred to Pesotum athletic teams as ‘The Blue Boys.’

BASKETBALL notes from the 1938 yearbook.

“The Pesotum Blue Boys blazed their trail to victory in the Trian Tournament, December 22, in one of the most thrilling games the ’37-’38 Pesotumites have witnessed or played.
The gym was crowded to its capacity and the fans were kept in suspense during the whole game.  The fans were almost hysterical in the last minute when
Penfield was ahead by a score of 21-20 and Batty made a basket making the score 22-21 (in favor of Pesotum). Just as the gun went off the crowd ran to the floor but the referee blew the whistle as one of the blue boys had fouled and the opponents were allowed a free throw.
The boys took their position at the free throw line; the crowd held their breath as the player took his aim, raised his arms and shot–and missed.  Pesotum was the new Trian Champion.”

In the first game of the Trian Tournament, the Pesotum Blue Boys played Gifford and won 34-23.  In the second game of the tournament, Pesotum played Sidney and won 23-21. Team members included Coach Montgomery, Dennis Vanblaricum, Harley Phillips, Billy Vanderhoof, Harold Buoy, Harold Schweighart, Harold Kleiss, James Hartman, Willard Cekander, Arnold Weasel, Wayne Batty, Leon Houser, Marvin Kresin, James Mitsdarffer, George Schaefer, Frederick Henry, and Assistant Coach Taylor.

Perry, Illinois

The History of Perry High School

Perry is located in western Illinois in north-central Pike County.  The town and its population of 437 settled on Il. Rt. 107 approximately 40 miles west-north-west of Jacksonville. Information is needed as to the origin and history of the town.

A brief history of Perry High School was sent to us by Perry High School alum Lori Berquist (Class of 1975).  The history was provided by Lori’s mother, Gwen Woods, a 1938 graduate of Perry High:

“Perry High School graduated its first class in 1879 with seven girls earning their diplomas. Perry was a three year school and remained a 3-yr. course until 1911, which was the first class to graduate from the 4-yr. high school.  The school had a boys’ basketball team beginning in 1909, until the school merged with Griggsville in 1995.  There was also a girls’ team about the same time,
but it was not interscholastic.  The girl’s uniform of the time was black bloomers and white middies!  Games were played on an outdoor court, in M.H. Browning’s
barn (you have a picture of it already on the
Chambersburg page) or in an upstairs lodge hall (Arcana Hall), or “away.”  A regulation floor was laid in a converted church which we called the Colisseum, in about 1929.
The building pictured on the Perry page of your sight was built in 1930, after the original two story building burned in January of that year.  A gymnasium was included in the “new” building, “as large as Pittsfield’s.” (Pittsfield being the “county seat”)  An addition was built and put in use about 1980. It included a larger gym, as well as classrooms.  This newer addition, as well as the 1930’s building are in use today as the Griggsville-Perry Middle School. A well-kept baseball diamond next to the school is used by jr. high and high school baseball teams.

Besides many successful sports teams, PHS also had many students who competed successfully in IHSA events in speech and music. The band program began in the 1930’s, and continued to the end.  There was always active participation in drama, chorus, FFA and FHA.  Over the years PHS graduates have become teachers (over 90 of them), college professors, doctors, dentists, lawyers, authors, fashion designers and other distinguished positions.”

Perry High School existed successfully for many years until a consolidation effort with nearby Griggsville was realized.  This effort took place in 1995.

The former Perry High School building pictured above now serves as the grade school (Grades 5 – 8) for the Griggsville – Perry School District.

The Perry High School Alumni Association holds an annual meeting and banquet on the last Saturday of May (Memorial Day weekend)at the school building.

Memories

More information and memories from Lori Berquist (Class of 1975):

“I graduated from Perry High School in 1975, in a class of 16–8 boys and 8 girls.  Interscholastic girls’ sports teams began while I was in high school–softball first, then volleyball and basketball.  My Mom was the initial coach for the girls’ teams–because she knew that we should have the opportunity! I remember we had to put our own numbers on our uniforms with blue tape!  The PHS gym (at that time) was small, as you find in many old high school buildings, with a stage on one side, and bleachers and a balcony on the other side.  Great fun to watch basketball games from the balcony!

Returning to Perry in the late 1980’s, I found myself on the school board in 1991.  So, I was on the board when we made the difficult decision to annex our school to the Griggsville district in 1995.  (HS enrollment at that time was around 30) It has been a successful consolidation, and has given our kids more opportunities.  However, I know that I, and many others got a good education, as well as many wonderful opportunities and memories at Perry High School!”

We are sure that Lori’s sentiments are echoed by all who walked the halls of Perry High.

The History of Peru Academy of St. Joseph

Peru (population: 9,835) is located in north central Illinois in LaSalle County along the Illinois River. The community is a midpoint between the Quad Cities and the south Chicago suburbs along Interstate 80, plus US 6 and Illinois 251 run thru Peru. It is also where the Illinois-Michigan Canal met the Illinois River as Chicagoans shipping goods to New Orleans would send them down the canal to the river, and it would eventually meet up with the Mississippi for the trip south at “Steamboat Basin.”

The city was first settled by John Hays in 1830 and developed a reputation as a river port, but was overshadowed by neighboring LaSalle’s efforts with their own canal port. After the canal closed to barge traffic, Peru regained their reputation. It was organized in 1838 and incorporated in 1851. The coal and zinc mining were part of the community’s success, which lead to a zinc manufacturing plant.

Some of the better-known businesses in Peru include Maze Lumber and Nail, which has made its own nails since 1848, Carus Chemical Company (the world leader in producing potassium permanganate), American Nickeloid, and was home to the Western Clock Company (also known as Westclox) until that company closed its doors in the late 1970’s after making the Big Ben alarm clock for over 60 years.

One of Peru’s residents would up with international acclaim. Maud Powell was a world-reknown violin who was the first American to gain this rank because of her skill and virtuosity. A statue of her is prominently displayed in downtown Peru.

The Academy of St. Joseph (which was also known as the Academy of St. Mary) opened in Peru in 1875 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, MO in August 1875. The school started with one or two nuns teaching the entire class in a one-year course, but later went to a two-year course of study. It was expanded to three years in 1892. Most of the students that graduated became secretaries, teachers, and bookkeepers.

It is believed that the school closed in 1909 when the Sisters of St. Joseph were withdrawn from the school. It is possible that the students that remained may have been able to finish their education at either LaSalle-Peru Township High School, St. Bede Academy, or at LaSalle St. Patrick/St. Vincent High School.
