The History of Gridley High School

Gridley (population 1,411) is located in east-central Illinois about 14 miles north-northeast of Bloomington. The town, located in north-central McLean County, is situated on U.S. Route 24 about 6 miles west of Interstate Highway 55. The Toledo, Peoria, & Western Railroad runs parallel to US Rt. 24 and passes through Gridley’s south side. The Buck Creek flows just south of town and the Turkey Creek flows to the west of Gridley.

Kev Varney found this bit of information on the founding of Gridley:

“Gridley is named for banker Asahel Gridley, a prominent politician and banker from Bloomington. He owned the land that the village was platted on along with Thomas Carlisle as the village was incorporated in 1856. Gridley is best known for his founding of two other communities within the same county (McLean), Lexington and Leroy, and was in good company with President Abraham Lincoln prior to Honest Abe’s ascent to the White House. Gridley was also the first millionaire in McLean County, although it is thought to be that he acquired his wealth by real estate dealings, banking, and by taking advantage of others’ misfortunes.”

The real history of Gridley’s school system is found in “The Gridley Centennial Book,” written in 1956. The first-known school for Gridley students was actually outside the village in the country in 1857, but a new location was built inside the community two years later. Another building was built a year later to handle the enrollment, which later was added onto and where the high school began its life in 1892 as a two-year school.

Building Constructed in 1906

Gridley High School continued to flourish when a new building was opened in 1906 (the one you see at top of the page) for all four grades, and it continues to serve the community today as El Paso-Gridley Junior High School. It is believed that the high school was a four-year school from the beginning with its first graduates being Cora Waid Vincent, Ludy Waid Huguenin, and C. E. McNemar.

In the early 2000’s, Gridley residents began consolidation talks with its neighbor the west, El Paso. The talks were eventually finalized and the two towns agreed to join their school districts. The El Paso-Gridley School District became a reality in 2004. This action effectively closed the two high schools.

El Paso-Gridley High School students attend school at the former El Paso High School. As stated above, the Gridley High School building is now used as the El Paso-Gridley Junior High School.

Athletics

The Gridley High School Redskins and Lady Redskins have an extensive history of competitive teams and athletes. IHSA hardware was won in boys’ basketball along with track & field, while the football team also made five trips to the IHSA Class 1A Playoffs. The Lady Redskin volleyball team also excelled with several solid seasons and one District title. It is believed the Ladies also competed in basketball and track & field, however, no mention of their success is listed on the IHSA web site (www.ihsa.org). It is known that the school had a baseball team as early as 1910 (there is a picture from the 1956 Gridley Centennial Book that identifies a team from that year).

Boys Basketball

The Gridley HS boys basketball team history is listed on the IHSA web site back to the 1933-34 school year. No less than 7 Regional and 4 District titles were won by the Redskin basketball boys. One great game in Gridley basketball history occurred during the 1948-49 season when the Gridley boys upset then powerhouse (and rival) Chenoa, who had one of the best teams in the state that year. Chenoa went on later that season to the sectional championship game where they lost to Pekin in a close game.

Gridley’s best season record-wise was the 1975-76 Resdskins, pictured above to the right. This team finished its regular season undefeated, winning the conference title. The team went on to win the Regional before bowing out in the Sectional.

Gridley’s All-Time Leading Scorer

The Redskins’ all-time leading scorer, Billy Hayes, is pictured to the right.  Hayes played at Gridley High from 1978-79 through 1981-82. As you can see the teams faired quite well. Hayes started at Gridley from the third game of his freshman year through his senior year. Bill scored a total of 1,914 points for GHS.

The best seasons, as far as overall records and IHSA hardware won, are listed below. If you have more information, please write to us via e-mail.

Boys Football

The Gridley High School gridiron was not exactly willing to take a back seat to the basketball program. This was true, especially in the early 1980’s and early 1990’s. Consecutive trips in the early parts of both decades were the highlights of those seasons listed. The best seasons of the Gridley Redskins with the pigskin are listed below.

A Song in Tribute

One alumnus of Gridley High honored his alma mater with a song. Jerry Meiss’ “Good-By Gridley High” receives local air play each spring near graduation time.  The lyrics are as follows:

                                               “Good-by Gridley High”

Let’s take a look back at the years gone by,

You know I graduated from Gridley High.

Guess you could say I’m an alumni,

Got my diploma from Gridley High School.

                              I remember the good times,

                              Back in those Redskin days.

But nobody wanted the cane that I raised.

All of my teachers thought my mind was decayed,

But I got educated at Gridley High School

                              Good-bye, Gridley High,

                              My memories will never die.

                              I couldn’t forget you if I tried,

                              So long Gridley High School

All of my friends thought I was really cool

With my hair slicked down and pennies in my shoes.

And when I made headlines in the Gridlite News,

I was a big hit (doo wap a doo) at Gridley High School.

When I got a little older I got married you see,

And my wife even fell right in love with me.

When a couple of kids enlarged our family,

We sent ’em right on to Gridley High School.

                                                        (chorus)

The History of Greenwood High School

Greenwood (population 244) in located on far northeastern Illinois in the central portion of McHenry County.  Greenwood is situated on County Road V24, also known as Greenwood Road, on the outer limits of the town of Wonder Lake, about 4 miles northeast of Woodstock.  The Nippersink Creek flows just to the south of Greenwood.

A nice history of the town of Greenwood can be found at the web address of http://history.rays-place.com/il/mch-greenwood.htm .  In summary this article states that the town of Greenwood was platted in the 1840s.  During its early days it was being considered as the possible county seat, however this opportunity never materialized.  According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwood,_Illinois) the town was not officially incorporated until April of 1995.

The history of Greenwood High School and the Greenwood school system is in need of research.  We were advised of its existence through research conducted by our long-time fan and contributor, Roberta VanBriesen McKisk.  Roberta found an article that was written about McHenry County schools.  This short clip was found in the article:

“Greenwood School–circa 1859–…This is a post Civil War structure.  It is a two story building with Federal brick styling.  First through eighth grades were on the first floor and high school was on the second floor.  It was used continuously until 1948–continuously for 89 years.  The structure is original except for the front doors.”

A short article regarding the picture of the school shown above is available at the McHenry County Historic Preservation Commission web address of http://mchhpc.org/greenwood.html .  This article describes the building and adds that it is now used as a private residence.

We would guess that high school courses were started in the late 1800s to very early 1900s.  Like many other small schools, it is likely that Greenwood High School was closed in 1948.  The kids of Greenwood today likely attend Woodstock North High School.

The History of Green Valley High School

Green Valley (population 630) is located in southern portion of Tazwell County approximately 10 miles south of Pekin.  The main roadway leading to and through Green Valley is Illinois Route 29. The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad curves its way through the town.  The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad also passes by the western edge of town and a branch of the G. M. & O. Railroad runs by the eastern side of town.

The area in which Green Valley is located had begun being settled as early as 1853. A post office was established here in 1866. The village was platted in 1872. It is believed the town name comes from settlers who were originally from Green Valley, New Jersey. (“Place Names of Illinois” by Edward Callary). Green Valley reached a peak population of 768 in 1980.

Green Valley has a long and storied history of providing education for its children.  The school system was probably started in the late 1800s. A three-year high school was started in the late 1890s. The first high school graduating class earned their diplomas in 1898. High school education continued for more than 90 years until the late 1980s when consolidation talks with nearby Manito Forman High School took place. This consolidation took place in the summer of 1991 with the creation of the Midwest Central School District.  Midwest Central High School was located in Manito.  Green Valley has remained the home for the Midwest Central Elementary School for grades 6 – 8.

The building used now for the Midwest Central Middle School in Green Valley was an addition built in 1960 for the grade school, but it was connected to the high school gymnasium by a breezeway.  The gymnasium is the only building still standing which was used for the High School, and it has since been completely renovated. The original Green Valley High School building has been razed.

The official mascot of the high school athletic teams was the “Hornets” but the students often referred to themselves as the “Green Hornets.”  Also, the colors were historically green and white, but gold was added to the green & white in 1976.

Athletics

IHSA hardware was won in boys basketball, boys baseball, and girls softball (www.ihsa.org).  It is thought that GVHS also offered track for the boys as well as basketball and track for the girls.  Very limited information is available regarding the many great accomplishments of Green Valley High.  The ones we are able to research are listed below.

The History of Greenville Community High School

Greenville (population 6,955) is located in southeastern Illinois in the center of Bond County. Illinois Routes 127 and 140 lead you directly to and from town.  U.S. Route 40 and Interstate Highway 70 pass by the southeast side of town as well. The Conrail Railroad line passes through town while the Governor Bond Lake sits just north of Greenville.

There is a nice history of Greenville which can be found at the Wikipedia web address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenville,_Illinois and one which can be found on the town’s official website address of www.greenvilleusa.org/. In summary, Greenville was granted a post office in 1819. The area developed over the years to the point where Greenville was incorporated as a town in 1855. The town’s growth continued at a rapid pace for the next several years and in 1872, the town was officially incorporated as a city.

According to the Wikipedia website address of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenville_High_School_%28Greenville%2C_Illinois%29, Greenville residents had a high school in place for their children by 1869. This high school was known as Greenville High School. During a small-school consolidation effort in Illinois in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Greenville residents approved a consolidation effort with several small high schools in Bond County including those in Sorento and Pocahontas. This effort was made effective in 1955 and led to the creation of the Bond County High School of Community Unit School District #2.

The Bond County High School is located in Greenville in a building built there in 1956. The school is most commonly known as Greenville High School to this day, however its official title is Bond County Community Unit #2 High School.

ATHLETICS

We know that the Greenville High School boys competed in football, basketball, track, and golf. We believe the boys may have competed in baseball as well.  We are in need of information on several season records and coach’s names in these sports.  We are also looking for the school fight song of the Greenville Flyers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Flyers were a force to be reckoned with during the 1920s.  The highlight of the program even today was a FOURTH PLACE finish in the IHSA State Tournament in 1923!!  This was accomplished during the state’s one-class system which was quite a feat in the day.  All totaled, the Flyers won a total of SIX Regional Campionships, FOUR District Titles, and one Sectional Championship!! These seasons, as listed on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org), are in turn listed below.

BOYS FOOTBALL

Our good friend, and southwestern Illinois high school history buff, Mark Jurenga, provided the following information on the Flyer’s brief football program prior to becoming Bond County High School in 1955:

First game on record:  1899 — Greenville 10 Hillsboro 5

Season Records

1926  2-3

1927  2-6

* In 1927 GHS joined the South Central Illinois Athletic Conference in football. Schools in the loop were: Carlyle, Centralia, Greenville, Mt. Vernon, Salem, Sparta. GHS finished 4th in the league with a 2-3 mark.

1928 2-7-1

**According to copies of the Greenville High School yearbook. Greenville High and Salem met in an annual Thanksgiving Day game in the late 1920’s. The results of two of these games are as follows:

1927- Greenville 7 Salem 0

1928- Salem 20 Greenville 0

NOTE: In 1926, GHS and Salem played the final game of the year, just like in 1927 and 1928, but it is not known if that was on Thanksgiving Day.

GHS dropped football after the 1928-29 school year until the new Bond County Unit #2 High School restarted the program in the late 1950s.

BOYS TENNIS

Two boys proved that the Flyers were good on more than one court.  In the 1928 State Tennis Finals a couple of athletes with last names of Combe and Mauser won the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in the “doubles” competition!

The History of Greenup High School

Greenup (population 1,532) is located in southeastern Illinois in south-central Cumberland County.  Interstate Highway 70, U.S. Route 40, Illinois Route 130, and Illinois Route 121 all travel to and from Greenup.  The Embarras River runs to the north of Greenup.  The Conrail Railroad has railroad tracks that run through Greenup as well.  A town of note for location purposes might be Effingham, located 20 miles southwest of Greenup.

The history of the town and its school system goes back many decades.  It is said that Greenup had a school building in 1840 (http://www.Cumberland.K12.il.us/DistrictInfo/History/History.htm).  A two story brick building was built in Greenup in 1876 for $3,478.  This building served the community until 1896, when fire damage forced its destruction.  A new, two-story, eight-classroom school was immediately built as a replacement and it stood tall and proud until its demise int he 1960s.  In 1908 an addition to the school was added and in 1927 a gymnasium added.  Additional annexes of a bandroom and cafeteria were later made.  The building eventually served “all eight grades and a high school”.

The first high school graduating class at Greenup High was the Class of 1890.  The final graduating class was the Class of 1949.  It was in this year that the towns of Cumberland County agreed to consolidate their School Districts.  Greenup, Jewett, and Toledo High Schools became Cumberland High School in 1949 with the school located on Illinois Route 121 between Toledo and Greenup.  As stated above, the original school building in Greenup was demolished in the 1960s.

“Early days in Greenbush” By William L. Snapp (Submitted by Dave Sanders)

The History of Greenbush Academy

Greenbush (population approximately 150) is a town and township located in the upper-western portion of Illinois.  Greenbush Township is located in the far southeastern portion of Warren County.  The township is boundried by Illinois Route 116 to the north, and U.S. Route 67 to the west. The web address of www.mapquest.com shows the town of Greenbush located on County Road 130th Street about one mile south of Illinois Route 116.  County Roads 54th Avenue, 55th Avenue, and Wolf Road also lead you to Greenbush.

An excellent history of Greenbush Township can be read at the web address of  http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/warren/the_schools_grbushtwp.html . In quick summary the township’s first settler arrived in 1830.  There were several problems with “Indians” in the early days.

The early settlers of Greenbush Township saw the need for education for their children.  In 1840, a scant four years after the first settler arrived, the first school was organized.  By 1848 there were five separate school districts in the township.

The web address of http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/warren/the_schools_grbushtwp.html tells us that by 1851 the residents of the Greenbush area were looking to further the eduational opportunities for their children.  Residents of the area met several times over the next two years to discuss plans for the academy.  In 1853 construction was underway for the newly planned Greenbush Academy. The school was granted a charter in 1853 and opened that year or in early 1854.

The Greenbush Academy began slowly, having an enrollment of 24 students its first year.  Word spread quickly however and the population of the area grew.  Within a few short years the attendance at the Academy reached a daily count of approximately 100 students.

The article does not say when or why, however the Academy closed after several successful years.  It would be our belief that this occured in the late 1800s, possibly in the 1880s.

Greenbush Academy Quick Facts

Year opened:       1853

Year closed:        1880s(?)

Extra-Curricular Activities

High school sports were not offered in the days when Green Bush Academy was open.  It is likely that other forms of training or teaching such as speech, band, and student government may have been offered. This has not been verified however.

Special Gratitude

Thank you to Roberta Van Briesen for her diligent research which led to the discovery of the Greenbush Academy information for this page.

The History of Granville Hopkins High School

Granville (population 1,414) is located in north-central Illinois in northeastern Putnam County. The town is located on Illinois Route 71 just west of Illinois Route 89. The Conrail Railroad passes through town as does two branches of the Allforks Creek.

The history of Granville is in need of more extensive research. A great deal of information was sent to us by the Hopkins High School Alumni Association at the request of Mr. Harold Maulfair. The information in summary, is as follows:

Hopkins Township High School in Granville was created in 1916 by the voters of the communitites of Granville, Standard, and Mark. It was not until 1917, however that the school was official recognized as a Township High School. Classes began that fall in the Granville Grade School building, however, later moved to the second floor of the post office. This was done while construction had started on the new Hopkins Township High School building. The $40,000 building was constructed on the north side of Granville. It was finished and occupied in December of 1918. If the Class of 1916-17 is counted as part of the Hopkins High School graduating classes, than Hopkins High would go on to graduate exactly 50 senior classes (1,329 students) in her rich history. The Class of 1965-66 would be HTHS’ final graduating class as a consolidation effort with Magnolia-Swaney High School brought forth the newly created Putnam County School District.

The Hopkins High School had many unique attributes including a pergola and colonade on the west side of the building. This was replaced in 1950 with a new gymnasium. Some less-than-nostalgic thinking in the mid-1970’s saw a grade school structure built in front of the Hopkins High School building, blocking its beloved stately look. This led to the Hopkins Township High School building eventually being relegated to storage use only. Weather, elements, time, and lack of use saw the building eventually fall into a sad state of disrepair. In 1998, it was decided to demolish the the once thriving and memorable building. June 23rd of 1998 saw the beginning of the building’s destruction by a professional wrecking crew.

The only building of the original structure that was spared was what was known as “the old garage.” This building was put to excellent usage as a museum honoring the Hopkins High School history and memories of those who attended school there. Congratulations to the dedicated alumni of Hopkins High in their attempts to keep the memories of their school and their childhood days alive for generations to come.

Athletics

Granville Hopkins High offered boys’ basketball and track as well as, quite likely, baseball as a member of the Tri-County Conference. The Hornet boys excelled in the 1940’s. If you have any further information regarding the athletic program at GHHS, please send us an e-mail.

Boys’ Basketball

The Hopkins High School boys’ basketball team was on fire in the 1940’s! Overall, the team produced five Regional titles and two District titles. Between the years of 1940 and 1947, the boys were IHSA title winners in 6 of the 8 seasons they competed.  The years and titles won are listed below.

In addition, the Hornets also won seven Tri-County Conference Tournament titles and took second on three other occasions. Unfortunately, the team records and coaches’ names for these and other great Granville Hopkins High School teams are not available.

This information was found in a book titled “March Sadness: Broken Dreams and Unrewarded Talents” by Walter A. (Sonny) Ziel (published in 2003).

Grantsburg High School

The History of Grantsburg High School

Grantsburg (population approximately 100) is located in the far southern portion of Illinois.  Grantsburg sits in the southeast corner of Johnson County.  The town’s location places it both 10 miles east AND 12 miles north of the Ohio River.  Metropolis is about 12 miles south of Grantsburg.  Illinois Route 146 is the main roadway that leads you to and from town.  Route 146 will lead you to Vienna just six miles to the west. According to www.mapquest.com Grantsburg is about three blocks wide and three blocks long.

The history of the town of Grantsburg and its former high school are in need of research.  We were unable to locate any information on either via search engines on the internet.  We know that Grantsbrg is an unincorporated village with its own post office.  It is located near the Vienna Correctional Facility.

We only know of Grantsburg High School’s existence through research conducted by our good friend, Jamie Driskill.  Jamie came across some basketball information involving Grantsburg High School and forwarded it to us.  This information will be highlighted below.

Our guess is that Grantsburg High School was created in the late 19-teens to early 1920s. It likely was a two or three-year high school.  It is probable the school closed in the late 1940s to very early 1950s.  The fate of the high school building is needed.  The kids of Grantsburg now attend school in nearby Vienna.

ATHLETICS

Grantsburg High School definitely competed in boys basketball.  It is possible that other sports such as baseball and track were offered as well.  The school’s team nickname, uniform colors, fight song, coach’s names, and season records are all items we are hoping to share on this page.

BASKETBALL

Jamie Driskill provided the following information on the Grantsburg High School basketball exploits:

“In 1947, at the Metropolis Regional, Grantsburg H. S. lost to Rosiclare by a score of 64 to 26.  Also, evidently Grantsburg and New Columbia had an early co-op boys baskerball team that played in the Metropolis Regional in 1946.  The co-op team lost that one too In 1946, to Golconda, by a score of 97 to 13.”

Granite City South High School

The History of Granite City South High School

Granite City (population 31,303) is located in the southwestern Illinois in the southwestern portion of Madison County.  The Mississippi River flows about two miles to the west of town.  St. Louis is about 6 miles to the southwest of Granite City.  Illinois Routes 3, 203, and 111 will all lead you into town.  Interstate Highways 55, 64, 70, 255, and 270 all surround Granite City.

According to a website regarding Granite City

the city was incorporated in 1896.  Granite City was established in 1892 by brothers William and Frederick Niedringhaus, two successful German-born businessmen from St. Louis.  The brothers started an eating untensil factory in St. Louis and had learned of a way of coating the utensils with granite.  The area where Granite City now sits was bought by the brothers for the purpose of establishing a factory and a town based on this business.  Hence the name of Granite City was given to the town.

Granite City has had a long and rich history of providing educational opportunities as well.  A high school was likely established early in the city’s history.  It was in the early 1970s that a population boom saw for the need of two high schools.  In 1973 it was decided that a second high school would be created.  Granite City High School was renamed Granite City South High School while a new building was constructed on the north side of town.  This school was named Granite City North High School.

Granite City South High School was held in the original Granite City High School building. The two-high school system in Granite City lasted through the early 1980s. In 1983 it was decided that two high schools were no longer needed.   Granite City North High School was subsequently closed.  Granite City South High School simply dropped the South from its name and reverted to the original name of Granite City High School.

Granite City South High School building continues to serve in its original capacity as Granite City High School.

ATHLETICS

Below you will find the accomplishments of the many great Granite City High School teams, athletes and scholars as found on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org).   We are in need of information such as coach’s names and team records.  As you will see, for only being technically open for 10 years, the Granite City South High School kids were talented and very successful on many levels.

Granite City North High School “Steelers”

The History of Granite City North High School

Granite City (population 31,303) is located in the southwestern Illinois in the southwestern portion of Madison County.  The Mississippi River flows about two miles to the west of town.  St. Louis is about 6 miles to the southwest of Granite City.  Illinois Routes 3, 203, and 111 will all lead you into town.  Interstate Highways 55, 64, 70, 255, and 270 all surround Granite City.

According to a website about the metropolis of Granite City  (http://www.villageprofile.com/illinois/granitecity/granitecity1.html) the town was incorporated in 1896.  The town was started in 1892 by brothers William and Frederick Niedringhaus, two successful German-born businessmen from St. Louis.  The brothers had begun an eating untensil factory in St. Louis and had learned of a way of coating the utensils with granite.  The area of where Granite City now sits was bought by the brothers for the purpose of establishing a factory and a town based on this business.  Hence the name of Granite City was given to the town.  Its close proximity to the St. Louis metropolitan area and some excellent, hard work has allowed Granite City to become a thriving city over the years.

Granite City had a long and rich history of providing educational opportunities as well.  A high school was likely established very early on in the town’s growth.  It was in the early 1970s that a population boom saw for the need of two high schools within the city limits.  In 1973 this effort came true.  Granite City High School was renamed Granite City South High School while a new building was constructed on the north side of town.  This school was named Granite City North High School.

The two high schools in Granite City were supported well for 10 years.  Decreasing enrollment and funding led to the belief that the ciity could manage with just one high school.  In 1983 this effort also was realized.  Granite City North High School was closed.  Granite City South was simply renamed  Granite City High School.

The fate of the Granite City North High School building was sent to us by Matt Lalor:

“Immediately after Granite North closed at the end of the 1982-83 term, the building was sold to Illinois Community College District 522, better known at the time as Belleville Area College (BAC), and became the Granite City Campus of Belleville Area College (GCC-BAC).  BAC has been Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) since 2000.  GCC has become the Sam Wolfe Educational Center of SWIC.  As GCC-BAC, its sports teams were called the Stars, competing with the Belleville campus.  Athletics were consolidated in 1990 at the Belleville campus and teams were called the Dutchmen and Dutchwomen, as the case was.  As SWIC, all teams are called the Blue Storm.”

Tourney Champs

Regarding the 1979-80 team and its Breese Mater Dei HS Christmas Tournament Championship as submitted by Mark Jurenga — Source: 2005 Breese (Mater Dei) Christmas Classic program, pg. 1,

“One of the strangest tournaments took place in 1979 as Granite City North came into the Tournament with no wins (0-5). Granite then swept the Championship with four straight victories, upsetting Springfield-Griffin, East St. Louis (Assumption), Breese (Mater Dei) and Chatham-Glenwood. The North team did not win another game in the regular season but did upset a strong Highland team in Regional play.”

Breese (Mater Dei) Tourney Facts:

All-Time Record: 8 wins 7 losses
